Would be great to get a low cost 12" CULV that has a mediocre GPU, even a 9400m, for sub $800 US.

    Is it likely to happen?

Most of the time when you look for CULV, you're looking for really l-o-n-g battery life. The 9400m/ION will take a signifigant toll on battery life. While the GMA 4500MHD will play HD just fine and save battery. It might happen with ION2, but other than an Atom 330 based ION netbook, that's the closest your going to see to that performance point with CULV type performance, from Intel anyway. AMD has options now, but you won't see an AMD GPU hanging out with an Intel CULV.

The Asus 1201N is pretty close to that, for what it's worth. It's an Atom, but it's the dual core 330 model, paired with the ION. I play Modern Warfare 2 all day every day quite nicely, and under $500 too. :D

so you mean to say that the ION is better than the 4500MHD? OMG o_O

ummm isnt the m11x just a 7300 culv with a gt335 and 6-8 hours battery life?

i dont think culv with 9400m would get worse battery than the m11x ......

my question is, will there be a cost effective alternative to the m11x?

Dude, anything is better than 4500.

Well, barring X3100 and lesser, but you know what I mean.

x4500 isn't that bad for anything thats not gaming. It can play HD material, handle Aero smoothly, and it's got decent driver support. With flash 10.1 it's getting even better.

I suspect the 6-8 hr battery life is with the screen brightness down, if it has bluetooth that's going to be off, and Windows PM set to balanced or power saver. The GT335m is a power hog. The lesser GT240m consumes up to 25 watts, so the 335m has to consume more. But most CULV notebooks tend to be very slim which hampers the physical battery size. Just look at the difference in battery life times between the ION netbooks and the netbooks without. There's a clear difference.

You are not going to find a CULV with GPU comparable to m11x...

Well the M11x has switchable graphics so with 4500HD on it can get the 6-8hours but yeah with brightness down some I'm sure. So far it looks like it can do ~4hrs+ with the 335m though according to one member w/ wifi on.

Actually there's one envy 13 (su9600+ati 4330), but that's not in op's price range. I think m11x is the cheapest culv option. New i series culv will be even more expansive.

AFIK the closest you are going to find is the ASUS UL series . specifically UL30VT, UL80VT and UL50VT, they are CULV with switchable intel/Nvidia 210

    you're welcome :)

this is probably the best answer in terms of being closest, but since the topic is about GPU, the 210/310 don't really compare to the 335m in the M11x. The 330m is closer though.. you either have to drop the ULV for nicer gfx cards or go for the M11x, or sacrifice GPU for the asus ULV line.

Why would someone want a CULV for gaming?

You know, now that you guys mention it, the HP DM3 has a CULV with NVIDIA option, but to get the NVIDIA I believe it's more than $800. More like $850 or $875. I completely forgot about the Asus UL-series! And the OP did say "even if it's a 9400m" so the G210m definitely covers that.

im strictly refering to 12" culvs here as the others already have options.

i dont see why its such a big deal, i mean if the m11x can have the gt335, why cant something say like a ul20 or 1810tz not be given a much less powerful GPU (but still much better performance than x4500) and cost substantially less?

oh i forgot to add, countries outside USA dont get the chance of a $799 base model. its $1600 where i am but slightly better specs. but given a normal culv can be had for $800 here.

maybe thats my answer, anything outside USA is not considered a big enough market.

12" screens in particular are scarce nowadays. The 12" market transformed into the 16:9 13.3" LCD's, then you have the 11.6" on most every CULV that's not 13.3" and Lenovo. I actually think the thinkpad x series is moving to 13.3" also, because so many manufacturers are using that size, it's more cost efficient.

i realise, sorry when i say 12" i mean 11.6, i was rounding, because they are not 11". ie people say 14" notebook they mean 14.1"

    US$875 12" Lenovo X201i i3-330M 2.13 2GB 250G W7P

    This
tells me 9400M has 3dmark06=1356. Lenovo's 5700MHD=1910 according to the T410 review, or close to double the speed of 4500MHD.

X201i occupies far less volume and weighs less than a M11x as explained here. It's not CULV but is 32nm tech, with more performance-per-watt. X200 series tend to provide excellent battery life.

Acer Aspire One 532g is another option. It will contain Atom N450 and ION 2 graphics, but in a 10.1" form factor.

well u do have a sony series which is 13 inch and CULV with GT 330M... Asus UL series is also good... G210M is quite good for integrated graphics.... almost 2/3 as powerful as 9600M GT if it has DDR3 memory...

The only Sony close in size to OP's reqs would be Z series, which is using regular i5/i7 processors and is way, way, way out of OP's price range. Not that it's not a nice system, don't get me wrong. Would love to get one :).

Yeah, the OP is looking for cheaper than the M11x. In terms of specs, that Sony Z-series is right on, but not in terms of cost.
