I cannot seem to join any COD4 servers with it doing Awaiting Connection 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9..10..Server Time Out.
It has been happening for a quite a few days, yesterday I managed to get on a couple of servers but today I cannot get on anything.
This is ridiculous, apparently many people are having the same problem and I cant check up on it because the infinityward forums are down.

I get on servers very easy. Make sure the scroll bar on the page is put at the top where it shows the servers with the lowest pings.

Yeah, it is all the way at the top, I never play on servers with more than 100 ping.

Did you install the 1.2 or 1.3 patch? If not search for it on the net and download it and install it asap.

I had this problem the first day when cod4 came out...
It was just the master server that didn't worked as it should be, and like 2 days later the problem was solved.

Yeah I had the same damn problem for a while. Now its fine. It does it occasionally but as soon as I click on the same server and try a 2nd time I get in fine.

same thing here, except on my desktop and my bro has the same problem too. though i find that if i type /reconnect it will generally connect. But I used to be able to connect to like all servers within 5 seconds with patch 1.2
And when i connected punkbuster would kick me for COMFAIL but after patching that it stopped doing that. -

Well 1.3 patch solved my timing out it seems. I connect to servers near instantly now.

Yeah, every time it times out I just type reconnect in the console but it is mighty annoying, eventually it works but it is a pain.

I started having the same problem after I installed the 1.3 patch (it's still garbage that we have to dl it from 3rd party servers, btw). I looked around on the IW forums, and this seems to be working for a lot of people:
Change the number of connection attempts in the console with the following command- /cl_connectionattempts 60
That'll set it to 60 attempts (you can set to however many you want, I use 30). Eventually it connects. I have no idea why the patch seems to be causing this issue for me and everyone else, but it's REALLY annoying me. How am I supposed to snipe people to blow off steam from finals week if I can't connect? -
why would u set it to 60... ud be sitting there while it tries to connect 60 times... just find another server, its what i do when i get this problem

Untill yesterday I used to have the excat same problem including others such as when I am moving forward the preson slows down then speeds up....like a warp thing, this was not related to fps or ping.
Tried everything, new drivers, advice on these forums for the connection problem, nothing worked, I could only join a few select servers and even that it was after numerous attempts of 10 seconds each, this was extremely annoying because of the wait, and because if the server is 18/20 people the empty 2 slots would get filled by others which really pisses me off.
I was reluctant to install the patches as according to some people they caused problems and I didnt have the problems those pathces were suppose to fix. In the end I installed the 1.3 from gamershell anyway and it worked a treat, in the file description it added some new features like antilag to all servers which I think solved my warp problem, and now I can connect to any server without even seeing the avaiting connection timer....amazing.
For those stil having problems I would suggest to check if you have any sort of firewall or antivirus conflict, p2p program running or peerguardian running. If that doesnt work try a full re-install of CoD4.
REMEBER TO BACKUP THE "PLAYERS" FOLDER INSIDE INSTALLATION DIRECTORY FIRST, AS THIS IS THE ONE WHICH CONTAINS ALL YOUR STATS AND RANKS. -
I take what I said about the 1.3 patch fixing my problems back as its not entirely true. Yes it did let me connect within a second but this was for only one day, the next day I had the same timeouts and long delays before joining a server. This explains why people who have had the 1.3 patch installed for quite some time still exprience this nuissance.
Anyhow I have come up with a solution which works 100% for me, but I would like others to try it out and see if its a unanimous solution.
SOLUTION
Notes:
Deleteing the file mentioned below may remove all your favorties servers, that is why I have asked you to back it up incase you want your favorite servers back or something else goes wrong.
For those who might be woriried that the procedure may destroy all their stats (won't happen) just backup the folder called "players" in the Cod4 installation directory as that is the folder which contains all your stats.

STEPS
1. Go to your Call of Duty 4 installation directory
2. You will see a file called " servercache.dat"
3. Create a backup of this file in another directory and delete "servercache.dat" from the Cod4 directory completely.
4. Fire up Cod4 and press refresh to get the full list of servers and try to join at least 5 diff servers and hopefully it will conect within a second or two.
6. My first attempt after doing this procedure led to a connection timeout again, but that was because that particular server was having problems, the others joined instantly thats why try a few out

The file "servercache.dat" in my opinion is literally a server cache, it stores all the servers for quick displaying next time you run the game and thus there is no negative impact if you remove this file as it gets recreated again after you launch Cod4.
If the above procedure does get rid of your favorities then you can just place the backup copy back into the CoD4 directory, I dont know if you will still benefit from the reduced connection times or not by doing this.

Ive been having this problem too and so have many others, it really is annoying as i just want to play the best online game this year. Hopefully a patch comes out. This only happened to me after i installed the 1.3 patch, and it seems this is the root couase of the problem.

Not sure. My connections were instantaneous after installing the new patch like you said. Your trick is allowing me to connect without timing out but not instantly. Sometimes it will go top 9-10 before connecting so still not sure.
On a better not my favorite server eliteforce tdm 24/7 is back up!! -
hmm, I guess its something wrong with how cod4 handles the servers, Ive heard that a new patch is in the works which should sort out issues with sniper rifles in MP and hopefully sort these server problems

This is related to some minor issues with Activision's Master Server causing some packet lost and connection errors. This is currently being addressed as we're going to move over all those responsibilities to a new non-virtual server we're setting up here at Infinity Ward however keep in mind it will take some time for the DNS to update for everyone and propagate the changes so you may continue to see some issues until it has fully propagated to each of you guys.
so yea i think it should be sorted out in a week or so
