    Hey,

I just dled CoD4 Demo and it asks me to install DirectX 9c over my DirectX 10 ...which seems rediculous to me....if I do what would it do to my system? Would it override my directx10 or would it install 9c under DirectX 10? Any way to play and keep directx10?

    thanks for your help!

Most of the time when you press yes it does a check before it starts and decides that 10 is newer than 9 so it doesn't install.

I had issues in Vista x64 by pressing yes, it caused a failure in my global DNS settings and I couldn't connect to the internet and of course the game wouldn't load - first time I ever experienced that error. In Vista 32 bit, I pressed yes and didn't experience any errors.

When games say they need to install dx9 I hit yes, i never actually see it install it and if you run dxdiag after you will see your dx version has not changed. It just seems to be a part of some installs where you have to give the program a chance to update the dx if it needs it.

Don't worry, it won't override or erase anything. It's not like a driver. It's basically adding files that you don't have in order for the game to function with DirectX.

You can do the same thing by going onto Microsoft's website. I think the latest version is August 2007.

Yes, but it's called DirectX 9.0L in Vista. Basically a legacy set of code for Vista to run in DirectX 9 or prior versions.

I installed DX 9c when asked. The game ran great ... BUT ... all other DX 10 programs lost the ability to run in DX Mode. Luckily I made a "restore point" just before installing CoD4 and was able to back out the changes - recovering my DX 10.

Has anyone tried saying "NO" to the question and could you run CoD4 under DX10?

That is very close to impossible, the installation doesn't work that way. Besides, you might as well just go straight to Microsoft's website and download the most recent DX10 installer instead of restoring, it would've fixed it all up for you.

Games that require a DX install usually install a special set of code that relates specifically to their game, but not the rest of DirectX. They shouldn't ever overwrite anything.

    What DX10 games didn't work?

First of all, Google Earth no longer worked in Direct X mode. None of the OS supplied games worked either. All errors indicated an inability to create a new Direct X window. .

I don't doubt that is what happened, it is just that it is exceedingly rare for DirectX to become non functioning after installing add-in code from a PC game. DirectX versions don't overwrite each other, they stay completely separate. Something must have gone wrong during your installation, because it should not cause any problems when installing those game DX installs.

If you do want to play CoD4 (if it isn't working without the add-in DX) then you might try reinstalling the most current DirectX 10 download from Microsoft's Website before or after installing CoD4.
