I just bought my first laptop this morning and it comes with the 256MB GO7400 gpu.

I'm not a hardcore gamer or anything but I do enjoy CS:S and Civ4 and possibly will try Guild Wars. I was just wondering what you guys think of this gpu, can it handle these games? What kind of performance have you gotten off of it?

    Any feedback welcome,
    thanks!

The 7400 is like the x700/6600 Go, and will run everything out right now fine. Though newer games liek Oblivion will need to be run at mid to low settings

Take a look at the guides at the top of this chart, they'll help you out.

Also, look at the game requirements - if it meets them, you can run it.

Any current game will run in some way, shape, or form on the Go7400.

    Chaz

I'm pretty curious is to see the advantage and differences between the 128mb and the 256mb go 7400s

It will be nil, because the Go7400 is not powerful enough to make use of all 256MB, let alone 128MB. The 64-bit memory bus on the Go7400 prevents it from being able to use video memory that effectively.

    ah ****...

so why do they make it? I guess a good way to scam money out of people or something

I was pretty happy when I noticed that HP offered the 256mb 7400 on the dv8000t but I guess there isn't a difference

oh well, it should suite my needs anyways. thanks for your replys and feedback chaz!

for starters, the 7400 isn't as good as the x700 and 6600 (they're both 128bit)
it's still alright, but 64bit is a fairly limiting factor

I second that the 7400 is not even in the same class as the x700 and 6600 as in terms of speed becasue of that 64 bit memory interface. You should be able to play most games at low to medium settings but if are looking to play the latest FPS like FEAR, the 7400 won't be able to keep up.

I've used the overclocking utility in the nvidia drivers, and just letting the utility detect thte optimum speeds, I gained about 35 in 3dmark05.

You have about 75% of the bandwidth of the 6600 as while the bus is half the width it is 50% faster mem. So it will use the 128mb but probably not 256mb. It has about 75% of the pixel shading power aswell due to having half the pipelines but 50% faster clocks. It DOES however have 50% MORE vertex shading power as it shares the same number (3) of vertex units at 50% higher clocks.
