Can the 8600 GT be "underclocked" for more battery life out of a laptop and so that less heat is produced?

    Thx

Nvidia PowerMizer should automatically lower clock speeds while on battery.

    Check your PowerMizer settings.

Oh i havent got a laptop yet but was wondering if to get it with this. Can the 8600 GT be underclcoked to meet the 8400 GS in terms of better life and heat that is produced?

Get a program like power strip or whatever, and super underclock it. It will extend your battery life, and produce less heat.

Oh ok. The thing is i ordered the laptop in my sig but i now want the Vostro 1500 as its the same price as the one i ordered except with better everything, including graphics. So do you think the Vostro 1500 (15") with the 8600 GT can be undercloked to match the battery life of the laptop in my sig?

probably not. maybe close. the real kicker is that if you used all of your effort to extend battery life on both machines, the one that started with better battery life will still be much better.

    alternate reality example:

some people overclocked the 8600m gt with ddr2 memory and were able to match (or at least approach) the performance of the gddr3 version. but in reality, the gddr3 version can be overclocked too, which puts the two cards at the same relative difference, approximately.

    same thing with battery life.
