From experience, would you guys say a better mouse really improves your gaming? I'd definitely say my new Audio Technica ATH-AD700 headphones doubled my frag rates. Because of its' excellent sound stage, I could hear exactly where my enemies were without any indicator. I'd probably also say my Razer Lycosa keyboard also improved my gaming quite a bit because of how much more high-end it is than a regular keyboard that comes with a computer. How much would you guys say a better mouse would improve my frag rates? I'm using my Dell IR mouse that came with my XPS 720, which is really decent, better than any other mouse I've tried, but then again, I haven't tried any high-end mice. I'd probably get a Razer Lachesis if it's worthwhile. I'd rather know from people who've tried a gaming-grade mouse rather than someone who'll assume they'll make you a lot more accurate.

I use a touchpad. I have no problems with that. I'm crazy

Personally, its a preference. Honestly, same with the headphones too. I like any medium-end sound cancelling headphones. As long as the game is all you hear, you could just tweak the volume up a lil wen your one on one and hear any step they make. I like my mx510. Old, but got me Cal-M and watnot back in the CS days. Still use it for COD4 now. its good that good feel with the thumb side indentation and whatnot. What REALLY destroys my game is when the sensitivity may randomly change. I cant even kill pointblank then. Its really about just getting used to whatever ur playing with.

I had some good experiences changing from an oem mouse that came with an emachines to a microsoft intelli-point 3.0. The thing is...i was soo used to the crappy mouse, and adjusting for its crappy ways, it took me awhile to stop over-compensating for it when i used the new mouse. But seriously, Even if its not making you any more accurate, i don't think i could survive with a moues that has less than 5 buttons anymore....

i would say practice makes you better. and maybe if you are going from a trackball to your $100 maouse you might notice some improvement. but other than that, i reckon it is mostly marketing hype. i have a g11 and a ms sidewinder and a fatality headset because they are all comfortable and have the functionality that i require.

I like to think it does, but in all reality it doesn't.
It's your hand-eye coordination especially in games like CS/COD4.
I bought a cheap $10 dollar mouse, and I used to play CAL M, back when I was in a good clan. -
I would say "God Mode" makes you better. For me it does anyway. :/

What is useful for FPS games is a high sensitivity level.
When I went from 800 DPI with my old intellipoint to an 1800 DPI Razer DeathAdder, I certainly felt a difference. At first I was really sucking at CS:S, but that's because I wasn't used to such a massive increase in hardware sensitivity. Before, I had the sensitivity in CS:S set to something like 12, and with this mouse it is down near 3.
The increased sensitivity really helped tighten up my aim, but it didn't improve my skill. In other words, I still suck, but when I get a headshot it isn't dumb luck brought on by over-amplification of low mouse resolution, rather it is dumb luck brought on by some sort of microspasm in my wrist.
The mouse will never make you a better player, but it will make things easier, especially if you are going from a trackball to a laser/optical.
I really wish 5 years of playing meant I was good at CS or CS:S. I'm so ashamed that I've never gotten very good.
Thank God for TF2. -

I don't know if it really helps but they look cool and make you feel like your doing better.

It's like having a better tool to get the job done. Much more potential based on ability.

I do have a good amount of skill (I haven't been into PC gaming for a long time), but in Unreal Tournament 3, which is a really fast-paced game, I feel that the game is a bit too quick for me to get an accurate shot (even with a good sensitivity, even though I do usually make 3rd in a round, you can expect me to start getting 2nd soon, though
), whilst I pwn in Call of Duty 4 because of the nature of the game.

Mouse can make a huge difference, yes. I play a lot of Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and having an MX518 gives me a huge edge of when I used to play with just a 3-button optical. For me at least, it's all about the keybinds, I can access my weapons faster and especially in HL2DM when you need your gravity gun a thumb twitch away at all times.
As for games like CS:S and others, it won't make you better, but it will make it easier for you to get better. -
To answer the topic question, yes it can. But 'better' is what's debatable -- people can have different preferences, hand sizes, etc.
-
For FPS's, definetly. It comes down to milliseconds most times.
I play on servers with under 50 ping. If I join a 150+ server my performance drops drastically.
We're talking .1 seconds here making a enormous difference, with a good mouse you can target faster and more accurately. Response are just all around better.
But yes, as others have said, you're going to suck when you get your first new mouse. It's like stepping into a new car, yes you know how to drive but the car doesn't turn the same, breaks faster/slower, whatever. -
Not that I condone fraud, but if anybody has an MX510 still under warranty, they're out of replacements so if you did need warranty service, they'll give you an MX518 as a replacement. The thumb button on my MX510 stopped working so I got it warrantied and they didn't even make me return/snip the original, so I have a perfect mouse with only 1 non-critical button.

Depends. I get 6-1 ratios easily in TF2 pubs and can usually beat my friend who uses a $200 mouse with my microsoft wireless mouse. Drives him crazy.
Really, anyone who spends more than $50 on keyboard/mouse are just trying to compensate for their small *****. -
I noticed an improvement moving from my standard Microsoft optical to a Logitech G9.
-
increased dpi means you don't have to move your hand so far. it is not going to make you any more accurate. it will actually make you less accurate as you have to be much more precise in your hand movements.
i play with a ms sidewinder on 800dpi. that doesn't mean if i suddenly put it to 2000 that i will be able to hit anything that moves........... you my friend need some edumecating. -
God, if a freaking mouse made you less accurate why the heck would you even buy it when you can just jack up your sensitivity. I'd bet my 400 DPI mouse at maximum sensitivity would move across the screen more for the same hand movement distance than your 2000 DPI mouse at minimum sensitivity. But is it as precise as yours? No way.
I'd totally agree with what StormEffect said by the way. I went from using a ball mouse to a Razer Diamondback 3G, and to be honest, it didn't increase my score by much. I'd usually aim for the body when using an AWP and that isn't that hard to do with a ball mouse. However I found it to be easier to aim for tiny spots like the a head sticking out from behind a crate due to the increased accuracy. I also missed less easy kills, because in the past my ball mouse was old, and sometimes wouldn't track properly sometimes, but with the new mouse there were no problems.
It certainly won't improve your skill if your aiming sucks, but if you missed a lot of shot in the past due to your crappy mouse, you'd definately start racking up more kills now. -
I think, and from what happened to me, just going from one of those old ball mice to an optical or laser would make a difference. The ball one's always get stuck when I'm trying to play an FPS. Oh, btw, what's the diff. between optical and laser? Sorry for going off topic...

If you live and die (and make a living at the same time) from FPS and RTS games where every mouse movement and click has to be perfect then sure the best mouse in the market won't hurt. For me all the fancy equipment is give the player one less excuse to hide behind when he/she finally loses to a better player.
