I do like cover shooters, but hiding all the time can kill my patience. So I wonder if Deus Ex:HR can be played as a regular cover shooter RPG, say, Mass Effect, or even Gears of War. I don't mind using some strategy for approaching, like in Crysis, but I do get frustrated if I need to repeat over an over certain scene just because I get discovered by enemies.
I wonder if Deus Ex:HR is flexible enough, because for what I have read, it is meant to be a sort of stealth shooter. Does it have the flexibility of becoming a regular cover shooter RPG depending on the augmentation options and decision making?
Thanks.

You can play it however you want. You don't have to stealth the whole time or at all if you prefer.

I found it more rewarding playing it stealth than all out guns blazing.

It is possible to play Deus Ex Human Revolution in run and gun mode.
Just invest heavily in body armor aguments instead of cloaking ect. -
I simply am not economical enough! -
Well, it's not one of those games where getting discovered while stealthing is the end of the world. I played through as a hybrid style. I stealthed when I either didn't want to kill or didn't want to fight a bunch of people. Sometimes, though, it was more expedient to just kill everyone in the room, because the cover isn't sufficient.
If you try to play as a stand-up shooter a la Gears, you will find your weapons running dry pretty often. There isn't exactly a surplus of ammo. -
I still can't figure out the stealth aspect of it. I'm stuck to the wall, waiting and they still see me even though I'm crouched and (right click) stuck to the wall. Several instances where I had no choice but to gun down the dudes because they were facing each other and it was the only path in or out, and no way to silently take them down without the other person seeing me. Reminds me of some Splinter cell games where you're inside and for whatever reason it's super dark. Even then, you stand up against the wall and patrols walk right past you even though you're inches from them, lol.

I killed everything. Stealthing for takedowns, hide bodies, and when I reach a point where a shoot-out is inevitable, I kill everything (mainly to loot the ammo weapons). So far, I have little in the way of armor or any combat effectiveness boost (only enhanced eyes/sensing, allowing better enemy placement on the minimap), mostly put it all into hacking.

One of my favorite tactics is to sneak (or cloak if they could see me) up on two guards and take them down simultaneously, it looks so cool, especially if coming from cloaked. This requires multiple upgrades and is really only viable mid-game and on.
Right now I am at Singapore finding the "no spoilers". I think that is close to the end?? -

Otherwise sleeping dart + stun gun. -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
You can theoretically run and gun in Deus Ex: HR but the limited ammunition will kind of force you into covering snipe fire instead. Otherwise, the augmentation setup can be tailored to proper in your face with bullets kind of style.

I don't run and gun but I hind behind a wall and pop out and shoot people in the face then use my radar to pick them off as they come to find me. I get mad bored sneaking around. Sometimes I sneak around if I feel like stabbing someone with that cool sword.
-
It's not that hard to run and gun, if you're willing to take your time with aiming and mainly stick to the pistol and the combat rifle.
Just don't use the GEP g-... rocket launcher, because there are all of like 3 rockets in the entire game. -
on hard no.
on easy probably -
Thanks guys,
I was so frustrated playing it as a stealth shooter, that I was going to give it up. Now I started it again, playing it as a shooter (more or less), and I'm enjoying it so much. I'm amazed of how flexible it is. I'm playing it on "normal" level of difficulty and so far I haven't have issues with ammo scarcity. The only issue is that missions are all the time recommended to be executed stealthy (i.e. Police station), so I don't get so many XP points, and it feels like I'm not getting everything out of the game. Also, since I'm not going fast with augmentations, I get stuck and I have to find weird alternative ways to get to places, i.e. can't jump or fall yet. (I'm amazed how many approaches are available anyway).
Still, having fun. Great game, great aesthetic overall. -
I commented on this before even if you kill everything with headshots you might end being out of ammo a lot of the times.
-
I hacked a turret and just carried it with me through the level all the way Namir. Lots of bullet were fired even tough I wasn't technically the one doing the shooting. That sure solves the ammo problem...

Good idea.
I do that next time. Sounds better than just punch him. -

I have a tendency to kill everyone I come across, and have never had any problems with ammo. I hardly ever even get hit. The cover system makes this game ridiculously easy at times, and headshots aren't to hard to get. 9mm and Combat Rifle ammo is commonly found on people you kill, as well as a good amount of other ammo stacks just lying around. I usually run out of inventory space early in the levels due to just having so much stuff. Add in the fact that your health just recharges back, and you have a contender for easiest game of the year. Not to say it isn't fun, but as long as you don't go around running and gunning like you're playing Duke Nukem or CoD, you should be perfectly fine, at least on normal difficulty. Can't say how you would fare on hard, since I haven't tried it.
Can Deus Ex:HR be played as a real shooter?
