Hi guys, I have an order for a 970m 6GB and would like to get a 1440p 144hz 27' monitor. I am wondering if it's a waste, or should I get a 980m 8GB (this would set me back a lot but I can afford it).
I don't mind gaming on 1080p, just that I need the extra monitor space for productivity (programming) and I know I can't just tune the resolution to 1080p.
Is there any advice you guys have for me? How to get the best of both worlds, but on a larger screen? I do really need the space.
By the way, I mostly play FPS games like BF4 and COD.

I'm assuming you're just going to hook up the monitor to a laptop? What kind of specs/what laptop do you have?
Assuming your CPU/RAM/HDD won't bottleneck your GPU, then a 970M should do fine @ 1440p.
Obviously if you can afford a 980M without batting an eyelash then get that. But so long as you aren't aiming to play Witcher 3 on ultra settings @ 1440p, the 970M is very capable, and over-clocks rather well. -
Aaah, my bad. It's a Clevo P650RA.
i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ
250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD
8GB HyperX IMPACT 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4
Am definitely gonna overclock it but just not now. Ultra settings is not a priority. High will be very suitable, AA would be off (as it's 1440p) and the monitor would be G-Sync -
I would get the 980M.. It will be much better suited and also get the 6820HK... The 6700HQ is a bit of a boittleneck...Ethrem likes this.

Dude for a 1440p resolution the recommended setup is a Dual 980 GTX (not even M versions of the laptops). Since you are using a laptop, the minimum you should get is the 980M and will have to tune down the quality settings a bit to get a frame rate of above 100FPS. If you are fine with 60 FPS then you should have no problem though.Last edited: Nov 7, 2015Ethrem likes this. -
Yeah, I modified the order to include the 980m, couldn't take the risk.
Am no FPS freak ;D
Anything slightly above 60fps will be ok for me for those very demanding games. The only reason am getting the monitor is for productivityEthrem and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
My oh my, not again!!!
I believe even an i5 is perfect for gaming, how can that 6th gen CPU bottleneck a 980m (Am gonna OC the GPU later though) -

i5 for gaming IS adequate. Unless you have a lot of money to burn, then the upgrade to the i7 will only give you a few more FPS but nothing worth getting excited about.Last edited: Nov 7, 2015Ethrem likes this. -
But will the i7 6700HQ bottleneck the 980m even when the GPU is OCed

nope. Games these days are more reliant on GPU power. CPU does help but not to the extent as it did in the past. IMHO Any GPU with a clock speed of 3.5+ GHz is sufficient if you have a powerful GPUi_pk_pjers_i likes this. -
The 6700HQ is 3.1 GHz...

Ouch, my bad, in that case, I take what I said back. Definitely go for a better CPU -

CPU can definitely make a big difference, as seen here, going from dual core to quad core can literally double your FPS:
I mean, generally, you'll be fine with any quad core CPU, but still, CPUs definitely can make a big difference for FPS. -
The CPU is a 6th gen i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)
The optional 6820HK is (2.7GHz, 3.6GHz Turbo) stock.
It's just 0.1GHz difference (Not planning to OC anyway) -
Get the HK... Seriously, if you can afford it you'll thank yourself later.

6820HK 1/2/3/4 core Turbo: 3.6/3.4/3.4/3.2
6820HK is unlocked and can be overclocked to 4x4GHz on average.Spartan@HIDevolution, TomJGX, Spikes042 and 1 other person like this. -

Upgrading the order now
One random question, if you all don't mind.
Can this laptop power an external G-Sync monitor. The description is quite vague and i've searched without any confirmation. Some reviews say it has Optimus while others, not. And I know you can't use G-Sync with Optimus.

Unless @Prema can confirm otherwise, I believe all P65x Rx SKUs, G-Sync or otherwise, have their external display outputs connected to the dGPU. So G-Sync on external monitors should work.Prema and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

OP, what monitor have you got? I've got an Asus Rog Swift 1440p 144hz monitor and can heartily recommend it. Lovely monitor, gaming is amazing on it.

I am looking at getting the Acer XB270HU. I would love to enjoy IPS on and off the laptop screen. Wish the Asus PG279Q is out already, will be a very good contender to help reduce the price.
Can GTX 970m 6GB run games comfortably on 1440p
