I'm getting ready to deploy and just bought a NP9261 (shipping soon hopefully). I wanted to pick up HL2 and the two episodes to play while I was "over there", but is there really any way to play them w/o having to go through Steam for validation? I have no "official" way of getting on the internet with my personal laptop, so if I have to be online to play then that's just a no-go.

In a nutshell, it should work without steam. You just have to install it to your HDD (same as steam, just not in background) and play it off there. Steam is just used as a convenient way to have games on multiple computers at once/not needing tons of CDs.

If your buying the hard copy cds then steam isn't involved. If your purchasing through steam then you have to download the games through steam but once its downloaded you don't have to be online to play.

Good deal, thanks for the quick reply. Looks like I'll be picking up The Orange Box pretty quick, then.

    Cheers!

No you don't need internet to play those EVEN if you downloaded through Steam. If you don't have internet connection it will ask you if you wanna go offline mode and you say 'yes' here. Good luck!

Sometimes I've had steam games refuse to open up in offline mode. Pretty random.

everytime my laptop has been away from a source of internet HL2 and the episodes have always worked for me. It will just prompt you if you want to go into "offline mode" like deaffob said...you wont have any problem. Good luck man.

You have to be online for the initial install to register with Steam. At least, when I bought my hardcopy that's what I had to do (plays offline fine after that). It took years on my old 56k :D

It plays fine in offline mode, but your better off being connected to Steam, they release updates pretty often for all of their games

Your required to run steam in Online mode, make your account auto log in, and play the game in online mode at least one time to verify files with the steam servers.. Just run the game, then load the first level, and close it, then you can log back in offline and play!
