I believe my Aspire 8930-7665 is a MXM 3.0 laptop. It has a 9700M GT. (If this is wrong somebody point it out please)

The GTX 280M is a MXM 3.0 too, right? (If this is wrong, please point it out).

So can I take out the old GPU and put in the new 280M? Will it work? My CPU is a Quad-Core 2.0GHz.

you can try. If the 9700M GT you have is MXM-III (3.0 is different from type 3), a GTX 280M from RJ Tech might fit. Someone already tried it on an Alienware M15x and it worked...

Theoretically it should, you will need to see if it has the same dimensions.

I called Sager and they said my Acer may not be upgradeable, because the heatsink and the shape is different.

    What should I do?

I was also gonna say that the Aspire 8930's cooling system might not be up to snuff to cool a GTX 280M.

leave it be..even if it does work, the cooling system most likely will not be able to sufficiently cool the 280m and you will have VERY high temps.

    Follow me...

    1. Your cooling solution was designed for a 128-bit card with 32 processing cores.
    2. The GTX 280M is a 256-bit card with 128 processing cores and an extra 512MB of video memory.

Exactly, also none of the Acer Aspire are meant to first of all run these kind of cards and second of all cool them properly. You are better of staying with a 9700m GT or getting yourself another gaming notebook.

Since the Gemstone series (5920G and newer) introduced MXM cards to the Acer family.
Upgrades have been done too - 8400M GS to 8600M GT in a 14" system, 8600M GT to Radeon HD 4650 in a 15" system, etc.
Just...not in the manner the OP suggested.

To be honest here.....I have a Acer Aspire 6930G which originally came with 9300M GS DDR2 256MB. I had it upgraded to 9600M GT GDDR3 512MB....

But, when it comes to cooling its very poor....My GPU reaches around 75c - 76c....Even when the unit is suppose to support such card as per thier web specifications.....So, all an all I would say a poor cooling system design to cool the GPU.......Also, due to such high temps my GPU most time underclocks everything below 400MHZ automatically...

So, the moral of story is any Acer Aspire laptop imagine with single or dual 280M cards hooked and working but then later on automatically underclocking both to around 300mhz core and memory speed then its no good then a piece of wastage for maney.. My advice is either you can spend money in cooling system of your laptop also from acer guys as they offered me same thing which was expensive or else go with alienware or hp laptops since even when you cover the bottom and play games for good long hours you dont have issues with underclocking...Only, thing you might notice is fan noise in these laptop because it runs at full speed compare to a fiber plastic fan in any gemstone series laptop from acer...But, its worth a spend in those laptop compare to acer.

    Good Luck
