    Hi NBR.

I was wondering if I can force my i7 2630QM to work at 2.6GHz for the four cores.

I know that turbo boost overclock it to 2.6GHz for the 4 cores when needed.

But I want to do it manually for some reason. There is a SpeedStep option in BIOS but disabling it is like disabling turbo boost. It will hover between 800MHz and 2.00GHz.

I tried ThrottleStop , but it does nothing for me. It will still hover between 800MHz and 2.6GHz.

    Thank you in advance :)

EDIT : I posted in a wrong forum, can any moderator move it to hardware components ?!

The CPU is going to dynamically change its clock speed up and down as needed to satisfy computing demand. Locking the CPU down to a specific frequency (overclocked or not), outside of the options you found in BIOS, is not possible as far as I know.

Another option you may have is to try intel XTU (found on the intel downloads page).

There are 3 versions of xtu, 2 versions on the intel website and then the really old version.

For you I would try the latest one on the intel website, it works for me (lets me turbo forever).

But your CPU will still idle at a low frequency when not in use, I dont know how to stop that.

But why would you want to keep the CPU running at 100% all of the time? It will boost when it needs to, you won't notice any performance difference if you were to lock it. So there would be no advantage at all for you. On the contrary, your battery would drain faster and your laptop would become hotter.

Well , I noticed that when WinRar is decompressing a file, The CPU cores keeps hovering between 798.3MHz and 2.6GHz so I wanted to try it at full speed.

    Thanks :)

I tried it but it seems to be doing nothing.
    Thanks :)

Full CPU speed probably won't make a difference. There's a reason the clock speed drops like that. Chances are it's waiting for data to load from the HDD or RAM, so it down clocks to help manage temperatures.

Also, isn't this in the wrong forum?

WinRAR is going to be bottlenecked by the hard drive. Case closed :p.

And btw, the 2.66 TurboBoost isn't on all 4 cores. It shuts down 3 of them to run 2.66 on on core. TurboBoost dynamically changes to speed of the cores by turning up the clock speed on the cores that are being using and shutting down the ones that aren't being used.

I was about to take a screenshot of Open Hardware Monitor showing that the 4 cores work at 2.6GHz when put under load.

    EDIT : Prime95..

MPIX, XTU does work...it can't overclock a non-XM processor but it can keep the turbo boost at max on the 2630qm

    HEre is what you do:

FIRST, download XTU version 2.1, 3.x doesn't work on Dell/Alienwares for some reason

Next, enable overclocking and overriding turbo boost in your bios. I don't know what is available on your Dell Inspiron bios, but if this is not done, XTU won't work

Next, increase the max turbo TDP within XTU 2.1 to 57w. It will only use around 52-53w, but you have to set it to 57w...perhaps due to vDroop. The slider is called "Turbo Boost Power Max"

Your turbo boost will stay up high now, forever.

now, keep an eye on your temps because i don't know what kind of cooling solution you have (i assume a single pipe heatpipe with single fan that does both CPU and GPU)

I've also found that stated Intel limits of 26x multi (i.e., 2.6ghz) with 4 cores active is very high and is not sustainable regardless of what you do

The following screenshots were taken with my old core i7 2820. Bios is an unlocked inSyde Bios from my Alienware m17x

Unfortunately, I have no options for the CPU in the BIOS.
Anyway, Thanks for your help :)

Hi, I have the 2630qm and 6990m and was about to start overclocking the 6990m. Would using XTU to maximize the cpu performance in conjunction be more trouble than it is worth? Also what would be a sustainable multi if I decided to try it?

Depends on your temperature, just try not to exceed 90C on both the CPU and GPU during normal gaming.
