    Can I unlock higher resolutions?

    I understand that the laptop monitor's have maximum resolutions, but when I plug in an external monitor, is there no way to get a bigger resolution?

    Its for my Inspiron 1520 8600M GT

    On an external monitor you can get as high of a resolution as it physically supports...there is no 'unlocking' of anything!?!

    If you mean get a higher resolution on your internal monitor once you plug in an external, no. If you mean run the external at a higher resolution than your internal screen...yes, just run both monitors at their respective native resolutions.

    No, that's the 8400M GS.

    The 8600M GT, where max resolution is concerned, is on part with the rest of the Desktop GeForce 8 series, meaning that it supports up to 2560*1600.

    Just don't expect to play any games at that resolution :p.

    The maximum resolutions for 2D stuff (as in your desktop) would actually be the technical maximums for VGA and/or DVI, respectively. Those are 2048x1536 for VGA and 1920x1200 for single-link DVI. Dual-link goes to (I think) WQXGA (2560x1600 I believe it is).
