Being the typical Westernized male, when configuring my computer from Dell I selected the most expensive video card (after all, it was a mere 30 dollars extra, and I was in a spendin' mood). Unfortunately for me, it turns out that video card is the GeForce Go 7300 and the GeForce Go 7300 turns out to be crap. So my question is, as you can probably already guess, is it possible to upgrade my video card? Maybe upgrade it too strong a word. Can I simply switch it with one of the other video cards which were options when configuring my computer?

Please search the forums. This question has been asked numerous times.

You can only upgrade your video card to the specific cards that are available to the E1505. Don't try to upgrade to something that is offered for the M1710 or E1705 or any other system and expect it to work.

meh... the x1400 is better than the 7300go but i wouldn't recommended upgrading your video card...

the difference between the two is not worth the money you have to pay to switch.... unless you refund and buy an e1505 with the x1400...but then there would be restocking fees.

EDIT: hmmm... don't know why dell is trying to trick there customers by making the worst discrete gpu the most expensive

If you expect to play high end 3D games on your E1505, then you got the wrong laptop. For everything else your computer serves the purposes just fine.

I heard a few people say that too. What I don't understand is that why 7300 costs $20 more than X1400 if the performance isn't better?

It is better in a different way. For example, 7300 Go supports PureVideo, and has better Linux and Windows driver support. I would also expect X1400 to run very hot, because it is overclocked version of X1300. I don't want to sound like troll but truth is people would pay more just to not get ATi card, and I am one of them. I've had pretty bad experience with my ATi cards, and pretty good ones with nVIDIA ones. I would probably not even consider latop that doesn't have NV graphics in it.

Speed-wise, 7300 might actually run faster some titles, but it is considered to be slower in sheer speed.

    What postmortem said....
I think you should stick with Nvidia 7300go for now, unless they release faster GPU....

i heard the ati mobility x700 can work with the Inspiron 9300. Could it also work with the E1505 or 9400?

    X300< 7300go < X1300 < X600 < 7400go < X1400 < 7600go < X1600

If you really need graphics, then I suggest you pay the restocking fees and just switch to X1400, rather than upgrading it yourself.
It's so illogical. If they're charging $30 more, atleast put X1600 or 7600go and it'll be as good as ASUS's S96J. Otherwise, they should just charge the 7300go a little more than integrated, but less than X1300.

Neither X1400, X1300, nor 7300 Go are built for state-of-the-art gaming, and will get obsoleted in 6 months, if they aren't already. Even if X1400 is 40% faster than 7300 Go it means instead 5fps you get 7fps, because neither are powerful enough. The new graphic chips get realeased every 6 to 9 months, and quickly render obsolete everything older.

What really counts is two years from now will there be driver support or not. While nvidia has unified driver, ATi is notorious for dropping support for older hardware and mobile GPUs.

    chiyeah,

agreed... 7300 is the worst dedicated option for the E1505, but it should do fine in most games....

    Doesn't go7300 have dedicated 128mb?
    Since x1300 only has 64mb, go7300>x1300>x1400 might be x1300>go7300>x1400.

My e1505 has a 256MB x1300, heres a pic of my e1505playing HL2 on my laptop. [IMG] I had to format the image as a jpeg since the orginal file was a 5 MB file. As far as HL2 goes, this baby is smokin. And as far as future proof goes, no graphics card right now will be able to rumble in the future because no current graphics cards have directx 10 support.

bottom line, most laptops aren't suitable for playing the lastest 3D games.

    Not exactly.
More ram gives better performance, but the ram wont allow the card to outfit another card above it.

    X1400 = X1300 w/ 128MB dedicated+128mb shared, and a higher clock speed, but same core.

so as a result, X1300 still owns the 7300.
    But if the 7300 was a 7400go w/ 64MB, it'd own the X1300 AND the 7300 w/ 128mb.

whatever. not like it matters. If performance is THAT important, you might as well dl ATi Tool 0.25 and oc the card.

okay since this is mostly about different video cards, it is being moved to the gaming section.
