Saints Row 2, Empire Total War series, Arma 2 and Microsoft Fsx. There will always be some games that you won't be able to run at max simply because of how intensive a game is, bottlenecks or poorly optimised code / sloppy Console ports.

    HI All,
I Plan to buy a laptop and have narrowed down to 2 models:
    (1) DELL Studio 15 with the following specs: Core2Duo T6600 2.20 Ghz, 4 GB DDR II RAM, 500 GB HDD(5400rpm), 15.4" 1366 x 768, ATI Radeon HD 4570 with 512 MB
    &
    (2) HP DV6 with AMD Turion X2 2.20 Ghz, 4 GB DDR II, 320 GB (7200 rpm), 15.4" 1366 x 768, ATI Radeon HD 4650 with 1GB

I would use it for office purposes, watching movies and would like to know if I would be able to play the following games and at what settings:

FEAR, FEAR 2, DOOM 3, COD4, Crysis, Far Cry, Fallout 3, GTA IV, Bioshock
    Thanks.

    Hey guys,

Would the following spec be able to play these games:
Battlefield 2142, Left4Dead 2, StarCraft 2, World in Conflict, Dragon Age Origins, Crysis
And at what settings? Will it be able to play any newer games (Mass Effect 2) even on the lowest settings?

    Processor: Core 2 Duo P8800 2.66ghz
    Memory: 4096 MB
    Hard drive: 500 GB 5300rpm
Screen: 15" (1366x768) High Definition HP LED Brightview Display
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4650 1 GB DDR3

    Thanks.

That should be able to play most of those games on high to max settings without much of a problem. Might have to turn down some settings like AA (pointless at native res) and tone down shadows a bit but I can't see any of those games not running well at medium. Crysis is the only exception obviously but its playable at lower to medium settitngs.

Thanks Senor Mortgage! That is great news. I would have gone for a higher spec though unfortunately the only other GPU available here and within my price range is the 230M. Is that a better choice over the 3650 for gaming?

Also do you think Modern Warfare 2 would work on Med at native res? Thanks again!

My laptop GPU is the 230m actually. Haven't had much chance to try a lot of games yet but Fallout 3 and Mass Effect both work great on medium-highish settings. No clue about MW2. The 230m is about 5-10% weaker than the 4650. It is a better GPU than the 3650 though (though I'm assuming that that was just a typo). The difference between the 230m and 4650 though is small enough that I would let other aspects of the laptop break the tie (for me the 230m was in an affordable, very nice look 14" lappy and the smaller size/weight beat out the larger 4650 laptops).

Thanks Senor Mortage, yeah the 3650 was a typo :(.
Will probably end up sticking with the 4650, oh by the way the 230M is a GT, would that make a difference?

Most probably your GPU gets hot and then it lowers its frequencies to lower the temperatures of GPU and memory. After it cools down, they go back up. I say probably BC I usually had to restart system to get back to default freqs, or overclocked one. Monitor your temps with any software.

Low to medium, just play with them. Shadows takes a lot of performance, so you can lower them or shut off.

No, as far as I know there is only 230M GT, nvidia quit with the previous GT,GTS, GTX...

If your fan air intake is underneath, put your NB rear side on smth elevated, like half inch until you buy a cooling pad. That should help a bit.

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 240m 512mb
    4gb DDR3 @ 1333HZ

    2 GB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 RAM
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 512MB

    Dell studio 1555(second)
    Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2,10GHz (2MB cache)

@Archangel-254 - Alien is better, graphic card is more powerfull.

Mali_42 - I don't know why you said that second one is better for gaming BC it isn't. They have the same graphic card and resolution, the first one has better memory(800MHz). only thing is that the CPU is a bit weaker in the first one but not too much. I'd go for the first one. Also if possible add 2GB more memory.

Hello I'm planning on buying this laptop, however I'm not sure if the graphics card is up to snuff to play The Sims 3. It's the perfect laptop for me, except for this one small thing!

    Toshiba Satellite A505 - S6980
    Intel® Core™2 Duo 2.2GHz
    4 GB of RAM
    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
HD widescreen with TruBrite technology (1366 x 768)

My current desktop has a GeForce 6150 LE with 1 gb of RAM and runs it pretty slow but can run it. Is the toshiba's card going to be better?

essenceofire - It is going to be better than the one you have now, but don't be too optimistic. That is not a card for gaming at all.

Well, I can't afford 2 Gb ram slot for now. I'm planning to have laptop as it is for at least 4 years.

I meant it's better due to better processor and 4 Gb ram. I don't now is that very
    crucible in modern games.

I'm thinking about getting GTA 4 to run in bootcamp in windows xp on my macbook pro. Think my macbook pro would be able to handle it?
I'm also thinking of getting san andreas and vice city.

    -4gb DDR2
    -500GB Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 2.5" SATA HD 16MB Cache

GTA4 is very demanding game, even very powerful desktops have problem handling it, a core2duo 2.4Ghz with 8600M GT simply doesn't have enough power to run it decently, technically, it can run on that rig, but you will probably have to lower the resolution to 800x600 or even lower to get playable frame rates.

San andreas and vice city should be no problem at all.

2.26ghz dual core overclocking to 2.49 ghz
9800m gt 512 mb (whats its desktop equivalent?)
    everything else fits fine.

what setting should i be able to play at?
apparently DA:O recommends a dual core, not quad.

That's not a good card for gaming, you'll have to lower the resolution and settings to low.

Low to medium, lower your resolution.

You'll get OK rates, depending on the resolution which you didn't mention. Medium to some high settings. They changed the recommended CPU to C2D.

You'll run OK, medium settings. Your biggest problem is resolution, you'll have to lower it.

That is not a card for gaming. It will be very, very slow on your notebook.

Theres always a chance. :D. Just kidding. Low to medium settings depending on the resolution and memory on graphic card, DDR2 or DDR3.

You'll be able to run it on low settings, you'll have to lower the resolution too. Card has only 128MB memory which is very low for gaming.

It depends how much is the difference in the price, but I would always go for the better one. In gaming it will be a bottleneck so if it isn't too much money for your pocket go for it. You'll be gaming on medium settings most of the time.
