If you'd like to know if your notebook can run a game, this is the right place!

Some things to note before you post:

• Integrated video cards are NOT meant for gaming. Don't expect much from them.

In order to determine if you computer can run a certain game we need your specs. Please provide the following in either your post or signature:

Answer: Sorry but Crysis will probably be unplayable (10 and lower fps) on anything but 800 by 600 and Very Low. Although that might be too much.

Try and keep posts in that format. Specifying your specs in your signature is OK as well, but make sure it doesn't go over 4 lines of size 2 text.

I look to be getting a new laptop soon, and though my choice in what I get is limited, I am curious about what it might be able to play. I'm really interested in whether it will be able to run Oblivion or Medieval Total War II( I would like to be RA3 and Empire total war, but given the graphics are about the lowest of the low, I would be shocked were this not an impossibility.)

Oblivion will run, albeit at a low resolution and at low-ish settings.

Total War II; I have no idea but the system requirements give you an idea.

I really would like to play Empire: Total War at maxed settings with a 1680 x 1050 resolution on a 22" external monitor. What mobile graphics card do you recommend?

 

With oblivion you'll want to keep textures on low and draw distances to the lower end of the scale, with grass off completely. I'd recommed playing on a low res(one of the lowest that still fits your screen aspect ratio) then try to enable the view distant land setting which is what oblivion is all about. There's some good performance mods out there, you could give oldblivion a try if your still not getting the performance you want.
Medievil total war 2 will run fine on lower settings @ 1024 x 768.
Red alert 3 & empire: total war might run on the lowest settings, most people can tolerate a bit of lag in RTS games anyway

You'll probably need a very fast core 2 duo to start with, maybe even a quad(but that's unlikely) Then for max settings you'll want at least a 8800\9800\3800\4800 series gpu for the video memory and sufficiant bandwith to take advantage of it.

I tried to play Call od Duty: World at War on it but for the opening cut scene, it was very slow and dialogue was out of sync.

Is there anything I can do or is it an unsuitable machine to run it on?
I'd appreciate any advice.

 

well i don't know who to ask but i got command and conquer red alert 3 on christmas but it doesnt work on my COMPUTER . I have tried everything and it just doesnt seem to load. the computer doesnt even recognize the disk.

My computer has:

3gb ram
ATI radeon HD 2400Xt grphics card
Intel core 2 duo CPU E8300 @ 2.83Ghz
Vista home priemium

But it works on my laptop which has

2gb ram
NVIDIA Geforce Go 7300 graphics card
Intel core 2 CPU T5300 @ 1.73 ghz
Vista home priemium

so why doesnt red alert 3 work on my computer

I think processor and RAM is ok, but I'm not sure if the Intel GMA 4500 is very capable to handle graphics of recently released games such as :

1. Prince of Persia
2. Assassin's Creed

The only game I tried is Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Sorry for that long list, I don't want to buy games that the Intel GMA 4500 does not support, but if they work even on slow then its worth trying.

And one more question, is it worthwhile to switch to Windows XP, will there be great perfomance increase? Vista uses too much memory even after disabling some services

No problem at all. At least medium if not quite high settings I would say.

I believe your laptop has an intel X3100 IGP? Your only chance or running the game are at 640 x 480 res(or lower if you can!!) with everything on the lowest settings, even then it's going to perform poorly. Maybe look up some performance mods for the game if there are any.

Assassins creed won't run very well on that system, not sure about POP but it's probably a no.

Crysis on medium @ 1280 x 800 in DX10, not sure about Rise of the Argonauts.

You'll get stuttering in any game with large open environments like fallout 3 and oblivion. DOX's 180.84 driver fixed some stuttering in oblivion for me(that and the streamline mod) It might help a little with fallout 3 too.

I, unfortunately, have not stayed up to date will all the latest graphics cards, but I can do a little research to get up to speed so I can help out here. Hopefully another user with more knowledge on the subject will step up soon (WILLY S has been very helpful lately ).

 

Unfortunatly for the can my notebook run it thread i just bought 6 new games including far cry 2, fallout 3, and mass effect so i won't be so quick with my replies, sorry I'm on lunch now so no time for games

Play @ 1024 x 768 with low - medium details. You'll be bottlenecked by your processor for most of it so if you buy the game you might as well mess around with the detail settings as they won't affect fps drastically below high.

Keep the resolution and texture settings on low and i reckon with a 2.0GHz core 2 you can bump physics related settings up to medium. It's definatly worth a shot as RTS games are playable with lower framerates than shooting games.

Crysis: Medium @ 1280 x 800 (maybe in DX9)
Warhead: Medium 1280 x 800 DX10
COD4: Medium - High @ 1280 x 800
The Orange Box: High @ 1440 x 900
RA3: Medium - High @ 1280 x 800

GTA4 is the only game you'll really struggle with.

THe orange box has team fortress 2... it will consume you

Medium settings should be playable at 1280 x 800.

Not maximum. Maybe high @ 1280 x 800 with some dips in fps below 30. This game can be played with lower framerates too.

Crysis: Medium - High @ 1440 x 900 DX10
COD: High @ 1680 x 1050(maybe 1920 x 1200)
Fallout 3: High (not sure on res)

Medium - High detail @ 1280 x 800. Try all high first an see how it runs

Tiberium wars will run ok on low. RA3 is pushing it, I can't guarantee it'll be playable.

Is it the 9500m G or 9500m GS? The 9500m GS is a more capable gpu for modern games. Either will run anything on the market (except maybe GTA4)

Will my laptop run Far Cry 2? If so what settings - will it have to be all low?

 

Can't be too specific but since the recommended requirement is a 2.2 GHz dual core\quad core then i'd suggest starting at high settings at a lower resolution and work your way up from there.

Set resolution to 1024 x 768 in DX9. Physics, fire, real tree to Medium(maybe high) and set the rest to low. You can bump shaders up to medium if you can handle a little lag but you won't really see much improvement in visuals. All i can see from going from low to ultra high with shaders is in water detail\reflections, and if there's no water on screen i only lose 2-3 fps from raising shaders up to ultra high from low!
Although i do play with shadows off so that would probably explain it

 

I love my XPS M1730. Good enough to play any game in high res.

Yes, company of heroes will play on high settings in DX9 and empire total war will probably be playable on medium settings and up when released.

I'm looking at the ThinkPad W700 with a T9400, 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 and Quadro FX 2700 512MB on a WUXGA display. I'm curious how it would handle games like WoW, Fallout 3, Sins of a Solar Empire and (eventually) Diablo III. What the heck, how about Crysis as well?

If I could swing it, I would opt for the FX 3700 1GB instead. How would that compare?

 

I purchased one of the bargain Asus laptops at Bestbuy yesterday...

I needed something cheap and quick for the Spring semester which starts Wednesday. Anyways, I'm wondering if I'd be able to play Mass Effect and other DX10 games on low (not counting Crysis). I don't wanna go out and buy some games that won't even run. Here's my comp's specs.

Yea. The 9300M GS isn't a great card, but it gets the job done. My desktop 7300 GT can play all games with decent fps.

 

Mass Effect on the 9300M GS? Not well. It chugs along on my 8600M GT.

 

They'll all run (Supreme Commander hates my system though so be careful). Stay on medium settings and a reasonable resolution (more than 1440 or 1680 widescreen is going to be unplayable).
