If a machine has 512mb Ram and scores 62003d marks 03 with Radeon x1600 could this be down to ram and not bus width? I.e it jas 128bus width but RAM lets it down?

Amount of dedicated RAM and bus width both have an affect on performance. Less of each will cause less performance...

I'm guessing your suggesting your x1600 has 512mb ram and your wondering why your getting poor performance in 3dmark05. It is either because (Depending on your model):
    1) you have only 128mb dedicated RAM as opposed to 256mb RAM
    2) you have only a 64-bit memory bus as opposed to 128-bit bus.
    3) Maybe the clocks on the core/memory were just greatly lowered to reduce heat.

Try continuing a topic in your previous post before creating a new thread.

edit: Or are you talking about system RAM and not video RAM??
In that case most recent games usually require like 1gb of RAM to run properly. 2gb of RAM for higher resolutions. But no they don't affect 3dmark scores.

I believe he's referring to system RAM. In which case, this usually doesn't affect 3dmarks, but it may have some impact in 3dmark06 since 1GB+ of RAM has really become necessary to game. But usually these things just test your GPU and CPU. But if an x1600 gets 6200 in 3dmark03, it is most likely a 64-bit bus width.

By the way, we already have threads with similar discussions to this, so it might help to put these kinds of questions in existing threads in the future. It helps keep the forums clean and you can find more answers in one place. ;)

right points taken....however I am checking with the manafacturer and if they say it is definitly 128bit bus but can't give me 3D marks then I will be between a rock and a hard place, no? Are some magazines incorrect that you know of?

Is powerplay enabled? That lowers the clocks on your cards to save battery power.

    What about Shared memory?

And is why isn't there a Card that you can adjust the shared mem?

For Example ... If a have 4GB system RAM, and the Card is 258MB shared.
Why not make a card that you can adjust from 258MB to maybe 512MB or higher depending on your system ram.

I hope I made sense. lol

Virtually every hardware component may have an effect. Less RAM may mean more background swapping, slower RAM obviously means slower memory accesses. Even slower harddrive may have a (very small) effect requiring the OS to spend more time on paging operations. The only component I can think of that (probably) doesn't have any effect at all is the optical drive. And even that is just a "probably" (The CPU may still have to perform a small amount of housekeeping for the driver)

Of course, the GPU is the most important factor, but RAM and CPU in particular may also have a large impact on the performance.

Possibly. I havent got the machine so everything is assumptions. Basically if they confirm that it is a 128mb bus there would be no reason to believe that the 3D scores would be low is there? I will ask them about powerplay?

The machine that the scores were on were by the same manafacturer but only 512mb Ram and non core 2 duo proce..this could impact upon 3D scores by up to 2000?

Yes there is. Ask them how much is dedicated memory and ask how much is shared of the 512MB.

System RAM and processor will had some impact on 3DMark, but it definitely won't be as significant as upgrading the video card. Upgrading from a Go 7400 to a Go 7600 raises your 3DMark06 scores by 2,000 alone (basically doubles).
