Hi guys (and ladies), i have been searching round the net for an answer to this for a couple of days and havnt had much luck, so i decided to enquire here.
I am planning to invest in a Dell XPS 1530 laptop with a Geforce 8600m 256 ddr3, for use at uni. I am mainly going to be using it for 3D work on programs such as Autodesk Maya and really wanted to know if it is possible to somehow 'softmod' it into a Quadro FX 570m (which is the quadro version of the 8600m) in order to enable all the enhancements in 3D/ CAD applications.
I am still saving up for it, and will buy it for under £900. I chose it as it offers the best hardware/design for a 15.4" non-mac laptop at this price range. I have had a look at the similarly configured Lenovo Thinkpad T61p and HP Compaq 8510W which have the FX 570m and are unfortunately both at least £400 pounds more than the XPS.
Please help me find out whether it is possible to use the 8600m GT as a FX 570m (it can apparently be done the other way round), your help will be really appreciated!

No, it's not possible, the fx570m offers additional workstation features that the 8600m gt doesn't. You can't add these features with a bios or driver update.

I could have sworn somebody did it with an 8600m gt, as it is very similar to the FX 570m. -
you can install quadro drivers for the 8600m gt.. that will help quite a bit. but will still be limited by hardware

The openGL performances can be gotten through a software though. You do need the software or otherwise it will be exactly the same as a 8600M GT though.
But for uni, the 8600M GT should be enough, the university here recommands the NVS 140M for aero/mech/elec/comp engineering
Can a Geforce Go be turned into a Quadro M?
