maybe the title should be "can i use my laptop monitor as a display for 360?". i couldn't edit the title.

is there any way that i might be able to do this? i was in a shop and i saw an adaptor that went vga to usb. i couldn't really read it because the package was in japanese, but it seemed that you could display another computer windowed or switched fullscreen on a laptop.

does anyone have experience with this type of thing? i'd love to play my 360 in hi-def on my laptop. i just bought this laptop and i don't feel like spending big on an HDTV.

oh, btw, my display is 1280x800, but i imagine i could try 720p with a little stretching if it is possible, or i could run it windowed. whatever would be fine with me. thanks in advance.

I edited the title for you.

You'll need a TV Tuner to do it, although I'm not well versed in the specifics. That allows you to put TV-type content into your computer.

thanks for the edit. am i really not able to edit it myself or was i just blinded like when i check the fridge for the oj and my gf gets mad cuz i don't see it?

i should explain further that i was intending to use the xbox 360 vga cable to connect to the laptop display through a vga->usb connector. i don't want to use the s-video tv capture card because when i tried that ages ago (on my old clunker of a laptop), it didn't look so hot. tv capture cards don't seem as good as direct vga inputs to me, plus that wouldn't allow an HD signal (or does it upscan, whatever that means). i imagine that the vga input would give me a proper HD image on this display, but i am wary of spending the money on the vga->usb adapter and the 360 vga cable to find out. that's the $150 pondery.

I know you can edit the title of your post, but perhaps not the title of your thread. Click "edit" to edit your post, then go advanced - at the top there should be an option to edit the title. If you can't, then just PM a moderator and they'll fix it for you.

I don't think there's a way to put HD from an external source on your laptop's display . . you'll be able to display the Xbox game on the screen, but not in HD. I believe you need an HD Tuner for that. I'm not 100% sure though, so feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

    Hey Chaz,

I have a question... say you have a 17" Dell XPS M1710 (with the great display ;)) does that mean that if you use your display for the 360 you can play the games at high definition? Because the resolution is 1920*1200...

    Thanks
    Charlie-Peru :)

Playing games on High Definition using a TV Tuner is currently not possible as Cardbus and USB 2.0 just aren't fast enough to support that amount of data being passed through. Some Desktop Graphics cards and TV Tuners are capable of producing HD images as they are on the PCI-E slots which are much faster than USB or cardbus. Maybe you should wait for those laptop cards to come out.

ah, thank you budding. that does make sense to me. after poking around on the internet some more, i think what i found was a cable meant to extend your display to a 3rd monitor when using a laptop should your card support it. i thought it might be a video-in, but it may just be another video-out for which i have no use. if i want to really extend my desktop (which i don't care to do), i could use the s-video in addition to the dvi.

oh well, it was worth a shot. stupid hdtv. ps2 looked really ****py on it and it was too expensive for just 360, so i returned it. now i play oblivion like mad and i wish i had it. i may get oblivion again on pc someday when it comes down. god that game will steal your life away. don't get it; it's too good.

Well like it was said in the previous posts, you can do it with a TV tuner, but it will not look good and you will experience delays in the game.

If you can't plug in your Xbox 360 there, is this just for plugging in another monitor then?

    hey ppl,

i have the same question except i think it can be done..

I have a HD laptop with a HDMI slot on the side, now firstly i thought of just having a HDMI to HDMI cable and hooking it up (my laptop has a tv tuner and windows media center) but i noticed that there isnt a slot for HDMI cable on teh back of my xbox 360 premium, its too big.

Any ideas how i can go about this, thanks for your time.

All video connections on a laptop are output only. The only way to use your laptop monitor with a video input is to use a tv tuner card. These can be found in forms such as PC Cards, USB dongles, PCI, etc. Of course, you will only get composite or s-video input, so don't expect it to look very pretty.

Some notebooks have TV tuners built into them. And I believe that the OP stated he had one built in.

Though... even with a tv tuner, it still will not look good. It doesn't look good when running a game system into a pc through a tv tuner and I doubt a laptop one will be any better.

    http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/Video/prod/AVC-1410/

Its cheap, it works, it can work for any audio/video source via s-video or composite, and it can also let you record gameplay videos. There is no lag.

However the trade off is that its a low resolution. Still better than nothing and I got mine for a whole 8$ on ebay. Plus its the best way I can think of to get gameplay footage for video stocks or my video reviews of console games.

    It will look very bad.

Like, unplayable. Plus... you have to deal with the lag.
