The game runs just fine but for some reason the benchmark option gets stuck on the loading screen. Is there a workaround or I should not worry about it?

what graphics card you got.
just turn the settings down. -

It did that even on the lowest settings. Like it didn't even let me toggle any settings! What I did was make a commandline.txt file in the main GTA 4 directory and that allowed me to adjust display settings. Benchmark works fine but it's really inaccurate to judge game's performance with it cause I had 65 avg fps w/ everything maxed out.
Anyway, my specs:
i7 4700MQ 2.4GHz
16GB SODDR3 RAM
GTX780M 4GB DDR5
Despite showing the error, the game works fine with 50-70 fps (sometimes drops to 30 or so).
Also what's with the benchmark saying that I use Intel HD4600 integrated graphics? The game would lag like hell if it was being used! -
have you got the game .exe in nvidia control panel forced to use the nvidia card.
are you on high performance?
are you playing on battery? -
I'm playing without battery with AC adapter plugged in. But I don't understand how in settings it can say that I'm exceeding limits when the card I'm using has 4GB video memory and that only 1.2GB of it is being used (as shown in the picture above).
However, I was able to run benchmark from multiplayer and then it said that I'm using GTX780M. Tf?
What I'm gonna do: I'll force the game to run on Intel integrated graphics to see how much the performance will decrease and then compare it with GTX780M performance. -
about the vram stuff, there is no game that can eat 4gigs of vram @ 1080p (that is not coded by apes using java for games of course)
so even if the game is crying and asking for more, it doesnt mean it will work slowly, but it costs nothing to let only the update 4 installed (best perf for me) and nothing beyond that -
Nevermind, I've given up with GTA 4. No matter what I do, it still gives me the same fps with Intel forced OR Nvidia card forced.
However, I did try COD4 with integrated graphics and it was barely running at 15fps, switched to Nvidia and it hit 100fps at high. So GTA 4 is definitely a bad game.
EDIT: If COD4 is giving me 15 fps with integrated graphics on max settings, then there's no way GTA 4 would give me 30-60 fps on max settings if that card was being used. That's how I realized that my GTX780M is being used in that game. And yes, benchmark reports that I'm using 4600HD but it's incorrect this time. -
run futuremark 3dmark11 and 3dmark and check your scores with others with a 780.
download them in my sig below. -
Hey, I have had the exact same problem in GTA IV, it is not your graphics card, it is the actual game itself. The game has really poor optimization, and because of this it will not run properly on any card that has more than 2GB Vram. However, there is a workaround for this, which can be found here:
Steam version: FAQ and Solutions, including Keys and over 2GB GFX RAM :: Grand Theft Auto IV General Discussions
Non-steam version: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/532144/gta-iv-can-39-t-recognize-the-video-memory/ -

Stop worrying. The game is very CPU heavy, and not so GPU-heavy, but it's badly optimized anyway, so you WILL get frame drops on occasion.
Regarding the game displaying the HD4600 card, well, that's exactly ok, because that's the adapter that's outputting displayYou're using the nVidia for rendering, and it passes it to the iGPU through optimus. Some other games also display the iGPU when gaming, even though they're running full dGPU.
Just enjoy your game. -
Well, even with the performance your getting, it still runs better than the console counterpart (I have it both on pc and xbox 360). If you are worrying about framerate drops then lower your draw distance it helps a lot.

Not sure if this has been mentioned already (skimmed the thread), but try creating a shortcut for it and under the target type "-norestrictions" at the end of the field. So /GTA IV.exe -norestrictions. That fixed my GPU not being recognised.
Edit: If using Steam, right click the game in your steam library, properties and there should be an option for command line additions. Just type -norestrictions.TBoneSan likes this. -

GTA 4 is well known to be extremely buggy on PC... hopefully GTA V whenever it comes won't be that bad....
Can my laptop really run GTA4?
