Can someone quickly explain this to me?

The Steam trade forum seems to be flooded with trades of DotA 2 for other valuable games. In this thread, for example, someone claims to have 50x DotA 2 and someone else says that the current value is $2 per.

Here is my question: are these DotA 2 invites, or something else? And if they are invites, isn't this a free game??

I'm confused, and must be missing something fundamental here.

    It's a free game alright.

Only by invite, that's why some want to pay for it.

But you can sign up and get in after a few weeks without an invite -- why so valuable? It's valuable enough that people are accumulating 50 invites and actually selling them off. Shrug. Anyway, thanks for the response.

Is the sign up thing still there? As far as I recall people with DotA2 on Steam just received extra keys to invite people. I don't know.. a lot of people were going wild on the SMITE beta too :p
