I know the 555 can (for most of the games in sc2), but how about 550m?

I had a few guys play it on ultra at 1080p, and they were able to play UMS maps fine (not demanding ones). Here's a better question I guess, would the 550m be able to play SC2 on high, and most other games on high for the next few years? Or should I shoot for the 555m?

depends on the res, for more meaningful results look for reviews of the gt 240 (desktop), both cards are the same while the mobile is underclocked and memory starved, so take 5-10 fps of each test.

to save yourself the time, no if at 1080p is what you want. At lower res like 1366*768 yes, it will play a mix of high medium (I had a 4670m that is too close to the gt 550m)

to play game on ultra is to play a game on ultra, it has to work on 4v4 maps

ps: you should spring at least for the gtx 560m for 1080p high settings, or just go for the gtx 485m while it can still be bought with the good discount

I agree with Mr MM. If you want to play the latest games at reasonable detail at 1080p for the next few years, minimum GTX 560m, preferably 485m, 580m, or AMD 6970m.

Even at 1366x768 the 540m or 555m will bottleneck your performance.

In any case I haven't seen much difference in SC2 between Ultra and High and Medium really.

My budget for a laptop is only 850, so I don't know if I can get a laptop with those GPU's. I've tried the what should I buy forum but they keep linking me to laptops with 525/540m or equivalent GPUs.

Well for $850 yes, you're going to have to go with 540m. A couple hundred dollars more and you can get an Asus G53 with 460m GPU. There's preconfigured models around, newegg, amazon, etc for about $1100.

For the Sager NP5165, I have a question. It says I pay tax when I receive the laptop. How does that work? Because my budget is really 930ish and I just left 80 dollars for tax. (9% tax in NY)

You shouldn't have to pay sales tax if you order from a vendor out of state. Sager is located in California, and most resellers aren't from NY unless NY has their own tax laws that will tax it.

With a budget of $850, the HP DV6 w/ 6770M is the only correct choice.

To get the 1080 screen it foes over.

Anyone know if a refurbished XPS 17 (555m) is as good as the 6770m?

555m and 6770m are similar in performance.

The difference between Low and Medium on SC2 (Mainly the shaders) is an incredible difference. On my desktop from High-Ultra (Or extreme whichever is the highest) is basically nothing. Coupled with a laptop size screen as well I dont see any point to it at all.

I know this doesnt answer your question, but dont think that Medium settings are anywhere near as bad as Low settings.

I'd go for a HP DV6t with a 6770. Better card for the money imo. Also, I think they have 1080p screens with backlit keyboards now.

It could run 1080p with at least medium settings. I'm a hardcore SC2 player and you'd have to take a screenshot and look very closely to tell a difference between Medium and Extreme (highest possible setting in SC2). The only real difference I could find was the glowing/expolsion effects, but those don't really change the overall experience of the game anyway.

I can get a refurbished Dell XPS 17/555m with all of the dv6tqe specs + 1080p screen vs an i5 dv6/6770m +1080p screen. Wouldn't the dell xps be a better option?

And yes the dvtqe with 1080p screen goes over my budget by close to 100.

Nope the 6770m will show better performance in gaming compared to the 550m. Its really up to you however. Consider other features of the laptop. I would personally go for the hp dv6 as I don't have too good experience with Dell laptops and I would think DV6 would show overall better performance.

The XPS 17 with 555m, not 550. Or was that just a typo?

I actually like the XPS 17 more in other regards.

Sure, the XPS 17 w/ 555M + 1080p is a great deal, if it's within your stated budget.

The 555M and 6770M are right next to each other in performance anyway.

    I say go for it.
