I'm going on a work term and I'll be in a very remote area; so I thought I'd buy two or three PC games to take with me... and one of the games that I immediately put on my list was Oblivion. I was wondering whether or not my laptop could run it or not. It meets all the requirements except for the graphics card, with only 64MB of discrete memory as opposed to the recommended 256MB. Nevertheless the GPU can borrow over half a GB of RAM; can anyone tell me (from experience perhaps) the graphics quality and performance I can expect from my GPU running Oblivion.

    Dxdiage details:
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
    Chip type: GeForce Go 7200
    DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
    Display Memory: 825 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 64 MB
    Shared Memory: 767 MB
    Current Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)

    Driver Name: nvd3dum.dll,nvwgf2um.dll
    Driver Version: 7.15.0011.6904 (English)

Without overclocking, it won't run acceptably unless you do some serious tweaking, even on min settings. My Go7300 runs it at min settings fine (30fps minimum) after some tweaking. This is all at 800x600 res.

I'm not willing to overclock a laptop; but thanks for your input. Do you know of any games like Oblivion that are less demanding? Dark Messiah? Morrowinds, perhaps?

EDIT: nevermind; Messiah looks overly demanding and worse than Oblivion, while Morrowinds looks dated and quite ugly. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The original Neverwinter Nights will play quite well on that. Probably medium to high settings (or better) at max resolution. I got the GMA 900 to play NWN at 1680x1050 at medium-ish settings and I felt it was adequate performance.

Depending on preference, you may like NWN better than Oblivion. I've played both, but I like them both for their different approaches to basically the same type of game.

Dark Messiah should run fine, it's not as resource heavy as Oblivion. Morrowind would run great, and a lot of people consider it far better then Oblivion in everything but visuals.

Oblivion will work fine if you use the Oldblivion mod, to be honest, you can't afford to be picky over graphics as you seem to be with a Go7200!

Dark Messiah is one of the worst use of source engine...it's heavy than oblivion this is my personal experience but looking at tweakers guide i realize is a game problem...on a 7200 dark messiah will be unplayable

Atleast with Oldblivion, Oblivion should run just fine and look decent with your card, propably at your native res. Alternatively there are also mods that reduce the resolution of textures without reducing the image quality noticeably, thus dramatically reducing also the required video memory: http://devnull.devakm.googlepages.com/128mbcards
But I think, since you have only 64MB dedicated memory, the Oldblivion would be a lot better option to get good compromise of performance and quality.
As of other games that are similar, that would run well with your card, I think Morrowind is the best choice. Dark Messiah isn't actually so close to Oblivion, It's more of an action/fantasy FPS game than HC CRPG like Morrowind and Oblivion. It won't run well on your system either.

I don't think so. I played Dark Messiah on my Go7400 at 1024x768 high settings. Granted, it varied from 20-40fps, but it was playable, and at worst, it would have been perfectly good at 800x600 or 1024x768, medium settings. It should be at least playable on a 7200 at low-med settings.

I only played the demo though, so unless it drastically degraded in the retail version....

I've looked at some screenshots of Oldblivion and I am positive that my 7200 can run Oblivion at a graphics level that I'm comfortable with. Its better than Morrowinds, thats for sure.
