Can the X3100 handle Half life 2, Battlefied 2142 and Counter Strike at a playable level at low settings?

Also do dedicated graphics card such as 8400GS drain the battery more over integrated graphics? And will the 8600GT use more battery power than the 8400GS?

    Thx for ur time!

Yes, yes it will. HL2 is very scaleable and BF2142 will run on low. Original CS is very old and will run well on anything. CS:Source is the same as HL2.

The 8400M GS will drain more power than an integrated and the 8600GT likely does.

The x3100 will easily handle CS and probably HL2 at lower settings. However it will have major problems with BF 2142.

An 8400m gs will drain the battery more than an IGP, how much more will depend on the laptop. The 8600m gt will also use more battery power than the 8400m gs.

    EDIT: second again

BF2...barely. The Source engine (Half-Life 2) runs at acceptable levels.

Generally speaking, the more powerful the video card, the more power it will draw.

Also remember that dedicated video cards help smooth out DVD and video playback, so you should at least consider getting a low-end video card if you plan on regularly watching DVDs or other video clips.

Well it depends, my old laptop with a 1.7GHz Centrino, 512MB ram and integrated gma900 graphics had no problems playing regular dvds but you will notice a difference with a low-end dedicated card over an IGP if you're planning to watch HD video.

Thx for the help guys! I meant counter Strike Source lol

Also wont the x3100 do a decent job of giving smooth DVD playback and video playback as i thought it was much betetr than the Intel 950 integrated graphics?

You can get 30 FPS, but at what settings and resolution, I don't know. Just make sure that you have drivers that have enabled HW T&L, since that boosts performance by A LOT. I don't think they come stock

Just finished upgrading my Dell XPS m1210

Was wondering what are the coolest FPS games to play on this machine?

I have the standard x3100-and am looking for some games to play(preferably no zombies) before my summer ends.

    thanks

CS:S and HL2, not unless you play at 8x6 with low settings. With that I was getting around 25-30fps, but it would drop to around 15 when it got busy (lots of players)

You can run BF2 pretty well. I'm running it perfectly fine on my X3100. Everything needs to be set to low though. HL2 runs perfectly. I've tried running it at high and it's very playable (maybe it also depends on CPU?). CS:S is a different story. Everything must be set to low. It is noticeably laggy. On maps like dust, the framerate goes down to 10-15fps.
