Is it possible to take namely an 8600m GT and lock it down to 8SPs with Rivatuner for power/heat savings for use in a laptop mainly used for movies? Also does anyone know of a guide showing the minimum underclock for mobile gfx cards?

You will not be able to reduce the number of SPs, but You can reduce the card's clocks. This feature is more or less built-in both nVidia's and ATI's drivers, it is called Powermizer or Powerplay, respectively. Nothing stays in Your way to reduce clocks further from the Powermizer's or Powerplay's default reduced clocks though.

Somehow controversial for me and may not work with all the drivers out there... And I don't have a laptop with an nVidia card to test it myself... But rep given ;).

Well rep given back because you're right that it probably wont work with the latest drivers and with win7/vista.

You would probably need xp with 2008 drivers.

But I did test it with an 8400m myself (I was using xp at the time with older drivers).
