So apparently I can't join a game in either this or my copy of MW2 on PC - guessing my NAT type is too strict (which is weird as I can play stuff like Left 4 Dead and Starcraft 2 fine online).
How would I check to see if it is a NAT problem? Using a university internet connection so not sure I could tinker with wireless adapters and the like. Using Windows 7, have F-Secure as my antivirus and have not had problems like this before with any other games. Tried googling the issue but came up empty, any help would be much appreciated.

well treyarch / gameservers are both trying to fix connectivity and lag issues on their servers. black ops is currently still very buggy when it comes to connectivity, but much of the issues are gone.
i'd just wait until monday of this coming week to see if perhaps it was a client side issue. i'm not sure how to explain MW2 as treyarch didn't develop that game, but i know for a fact that the servers for Black Ops are messed up because i own a server and gameservers has sent messages out explaining that they're trying to fix the issue.
so far, they've mostly configurated most of the servers to set the rate from 5000 to 25000 to help reduce a bit of the lag. there are client side patches scheduled to release over the weekend, and i know the one yesterday helped out very much, but perhaps it hasn't made its way around the world. try toying around with ingame console commands and see if you can fix the issue.
as i do not have mw2 for pc, i could only help you with black ops (or at least what has been helping me).
cl_maxpackets 100
rate 25000
and there was one more that i changed but i forget the command. it started with an 's', but i cannot remember it. -
my nat every other day changed to strict but i could still play without any problems on mw2
in black ops i dont think it matters about strict nat as they are dedicated servers.
it could be something to do with your university connection though. -
Thanks, I appreciate the help.
Currently in Japan so distance to most of the servers is an issue but my high speed uni internet should reduce most of the lag.
Randomly can't connect to the Black Ops servers at all occasionally though which makes me feel like it's an issue on their end. But the fact that I can't join MW2 games makes me worry about the strictness of my NAT and firewall.
I'll wait and see how it turns out by Monday.
Can't connect to Black Ops online
