I just got my Asus F8VA-C1 and installed BF2142 but it won't run. I've done some searching for solutions, but they aren't working for me.

I've tried selecting "Run as administrator" and "Windows XP SP2" and compatible previous version, but no luck. (prior to selecting those I was getting the message "BF2142.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." No solution is found though).

When I click to run it I first get a message saying "Please insert Battlefield 2142 Install Disc and Select OK to Retry". But of course the disc is in. When the program autoruns when I open and close the drawer I see the battlefield menu, but when I try to play I again get the message to insert the disc.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Dan

Uninstall the game and reinstall the game. Don't put in backwards compatible mode I did the samething and got the disk error and unable to read the disk. Is there a 64bit version of the game? I thought there was?

I tried running it before doing that and that's when I got "BF2142.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

first switch off XP compatibility mode - it doesn't work -, after that the insert cd error should disapear (but still run Bf2142 as administrator)

there are a couple of (odd) things you might try:
    - graphics: reduce lightning quality to medium
    - sound: install recent drivers, you may decrese audio quality as well
    - important: make sure punkbuster services are allowed by your firewall!
    - install punkbuster updates manually ( pb setup)
    - test your PB services after each update + allow in firewall ( PB service test)

I've been struggling with BF2142/Vista64 for quite a while, mostly because of weird punkbuster issues which resulted in "stop working" crashs. Worked for me. gl :)

I will try updating drivers tonight and post an update.

I'm not even trying to get online to play, just solo. I tried reinstalling, tried not using the XP compatibility mode, and tried not running as admin...still nothing :(

This makes me worry. BF2142 is the first game I'm going to load on my notebook when I get it, and yes, it will be running Vista 64.

Yeah, I just got the laptop and was looking forward to the game (I bought it when it first came out and my previous computer couldn't run it). I've had the game for over a year and haven't played it yet :(

Ok, so I went through the device manager and it says my video card and dvd drive have the latest drivers and the game still won't play.

I'm starting to hate vista and I haven't had it for 3 full days. Any other ideas?

    Thanks all.

Welcome to reality dannyd. It's called dual boot with XP and middle finger to MS...

You can dual boot with xp or trying getting a laptop with Vista 32 bit I think it plays games more nicely compared to the 64bit.

I have played BF2142 on VistaX64 for years now. Not that I actually play anymore but it runs perfectly. I owned the game since release so dont panic and assume the game does not work with x64 its a issue isolated to you and your system.

It even supports widescreen now with the newest 1.50 patch.

Just a wild guess but wonder if the F8 is one of the models that has a 59 or 61hz refresh rate. BF2142 will not run without a custom config to tell it to run the right refresh rate as its locked to 60hz and will crash otherwise.

edit: my new notebook uses x64 home premium so click the review link in my sig and I have screen shots & benchmarks of it running (in widescreen)

Wild guesses are gold right now....because nothing else is working.

Do you happen to know if there is a way to update BF2142 to accept other refresh rates?

Yes there is, or I had not mentioned it lol.
You first need to tell me if your panel is 60hz or not.

If not you can then look up the config file fix, or use this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=212328

Id much rather edit the game file than edit the refresh rate of my screen tho.

edit: and since I am feeling generous almost anybody playing 2142 on a notebook can make use of this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=256156

    Thanks for the help.

My laptop is at home (I'm at work) so I'll have to check later. I'm not finding the refresh rate for it online.

The refresh rate is 67hz! So I guess I need to adjust the game.

Glad I helped, did you change the config file in the game for 67hz or lower the refresh to 60hz?

So the 60 Hz framerate was the issue? If that's all it was, I'm in luck for my future experience :D

Ok, fellas. Hope some reads this. I hope either EA or MS drop dead, but I'm pulling my hair out trying to get BF2142 to work on my laptop.
Its a Toshiba Sat A215-S6816. AMD Turion Dual Core x64. 4gb RAM, ATI Radeon 2400 HD with 128mb, and Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

BF2142 craps out after progress bar finishes loading a map. Haven't played the game AT ALL. Won't make it that far. Tried all the stuff I can think of, admin rights, UAC on/off, middle-finger to MS, etc. Nothing. Keeps crashing out.

If anyone can help, email me at usncpg45 AT hotmail DOT com

I actually found out the solution thanks to exhaustive searching through Google (this one of those times where I wouldn't tell someone to just "google it" because like I said, I had to search through so many search hits).

Supposedly Vista 64 doesn't use ".exe" files like we know 'em and the BF2142 exe doesn't work with Vista very well, at least that was the explanation on the forum I read on. So I was able to procure an .exe replacement for the standard one in the BF2142 Program Files. Here is the link to the forum, and it'll give you instructions on installing the file. Good luck, and it should work. And don't thank me, thank the guy on that forum for finding the replacement .exe! http://www.totalgamingnetwork.com/main/showthread.php?t=160844

Also be aware that his link has some spaces in it (you'll have to copy/paste it in you browser), make sure to close the spaces as you paste it in your browser search field.

The fixed exe is for a problem that I forget, it was one solution but there were others too. I wanna say that was a copy protection issue.

I have installed and played 2142 several times on more than one 64bit machine without any fixes, so it does work out of the box unless your system happens to have one of those rare issues.

Edit: Yep ^^ was on the ball :p

Thats the fix for the secure rom problem (aka copy protection) and that forum you linked to is the one I told you to go to.

I think the copy protection issue is most prevalent, if not exclusive to the Deluxe Editon of BF2142. As far as the link goes, I found it via Googling, but if you did have it posted somewhere already (I probably never noticed it), it sure would've saved me an hour of googling various combinations of , battlefield, 2142, vista, 64, x64, problems, issues, start up, etc, etc. :p

lol yeah, but its good to stay sharp on google skills.

I have been doing a ton of google diving myself trying to learn how to use a few different X264 frontends for video coding.

Talk about frustration! I just bought an ASUS g71g-q1with 64bit vista. I should be able to take on anything with this. No bf2142.
I've installed and uninstalled time and again. When I first install, upon loading, it shuts down after a mere black blip and says bf2142.exe has sopped working. After I update to patch 1.5, It gives me an emulation software error.
I've tried everything on this and other forums.
But I wonder if the refresh rate is my problem. I downloaded direct refresh. In the tray the program says current res is 1280x1024 @62hz. I changed the hz to 60 and it won't change in the tray. And frankly, I don't understand how to change it in the game file.

New info here...I just reinstalled and then figured out how to open that video.con file and changed the refresh rate to my screen's native 62hz. After that the game was loading. BUT, after the 1.5 patch, I still get that Emulation issue.

    ok. We're good!
When I downloaded the emulation patch, It didn't extract to the correct folder.
    It's ok now!
