So there are plenty of 4X space games, with great games like MOO2 and GalCiv2 at the top of the pack. Then there are single-ship fighter simulation games, where you pilot a one-man ship or your squad in a more action-type game. There's even one or two real-time tactical type game where you build and command fleets (without the empire-building aspect).

What I want to know is - are there any games where you're in charge of a capital ship? Or even the flagship of a fleet of ships? Not necessarily only in a RTS sense, but with actual command of the capital ship as well.

Only old ones come to mind for me. Independence War (1&2) ,BattleCruiser 3000AD (shudders!), and HomeWorld (1&2)

It's about time for us to have a new one to be honest.

I'm sure there'll be a starcraft II custom map that's a capital ship version of the warcraft 3 battleshipds map if that counts.

Star Wars: Empire at war had a good capital ship element but it was more RTS than anything else. I for one, would love to have a FPS type game where you could man different stations on a cruiser/battleship as well as fly a fighter. Think of BF2142 in space. I know Star Wars: Battlefront2 had a bit of this but it could have been much better.

Homeworld is close (both games were fantastic!), but not exactly what you are looking for.

Is something like X3: Reunion close to what you want?

Eve Online might be, not sure.

I have Battlecruiser. It's a decent game if you can ever get the hang of the controls.

Lysander is right! EVE Online allows you to control MASSIVE capital ships. They are sometimes so large that you cannot use the normal stargate system and have to install a jump drive into your ship to get around.

Thing is though, for all you know you are the only crew member on the ship... nothing is ever said about the countless others who must crew the thing for you while you run it.

X3 Reunion can get like that after you get rich enough and purchase a capital ship and the accompanying fleet.

Hrm, I'll have to try out X3 Reunion. Does it actually give you a crew and different parts of the ship to order around though? Or is it simply you in a larger ship basically (like EVE)?
