I am currently looking for a gaming laptop and have come across two cheap, and yet powerful machines, however am having slight trouble deciding which is the better buy.
Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS7741G-5877 NoteBook Intel Core i3 350M(2.26GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 320GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS5745G-3690 NoteBook Intel Core i5 450M(2.40GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
A major question of mine is the resolution, I have read that a 1366 x 768 resolution is bad for gaming, how much of an effect does it really have?

It's not a bad resolution, it's just above 720p, which is the minimal you would want. The 5650 would be my pick of the two, as it tends to have a good lead over the GT 330M in most titles. The 5650 on that resolution would be a good match. Current games would be best ran at that resolution in order to get good performance (framerate) while still maintaining eye candy. Some younger games (1-2 years old) should run quite well if not excellently, and heck you may be able to do 1080p with some of them easily and still get good framerate.

Both of them are good.... Just focus on the video card man... If you prefer good gaming experience your pc must have a good video card...

That 17.3" Acer with ATI Mobility HD 5650 may also include a much higher resolution screen also, (1600x900) so you dont have to get all scroll happy when viewing websites.
