What's the cheapest laptop with a NVidia 8600M GT or equivalent? I've been searching forever and I've only found the Dell 1520 and Vostro, but both of these don't get great reviews. Are there any other alternatives?

There's also Asus G1/G2 or C90S - C90S is approximately $1400 if you get it barebone and buy other parts separately, but apparently, there are some problems with BIOS and memory... But I think Asus costs more than Dell - probably because Dell's 1520's 8600M GT is DDR2, whereas G1/G2 has DDR3 (C90 isn't DDR3).

I was considering C90 but then I heard C80 was coming out, so I needed a mid-ranged laptop and decided HP - until C80 comes out. :D

Edit: Forgot that there was also Sager 2090/Compal IFL90.

The Dell 1520/1500 is the cheapest 8600M-GT laptop out their. If you want to spend more, you could look at the Acer Aspire Gemstone 5920, the Compal IFL90, or the Asus C90s.

Only on that computer. It's special, called MXM compat.

Currently there are no better cards made for that system, though there should be soon. You can buy cards at MXM Upgrade, run by our forum member IceTea.

Dell Vostro 1500 is DEFINITELY the cheapest. Yes, it's cheaper than Inspirons and Asus.

I swear inspirions are cheaper. I've configured a vostra 1500 and have never seen it come to as cheap as my 1520. I got my 1520 for 1200

Even though this notebook has an upgradeable card (MXM II), there aren't that many choices out there - it's better to stick with the standard 8600M GT C90 (depending where you order yours) comes with until Asus releases new GPUs, and hopefully, when they mean "upgradeable" they actually will offer better cards than 8600.

The notebook's somewhat futureproof - the most upgrade for the CPU being 6800 Conroe - but I chose to stick with half the cost laptop and buy a better one later because of people complaining about problems with this notebook.

Dell has probably the cheapest notebook with 8600M GT though.

It depends on what hardware you want. You can get a decent gaming machine in the Vostro for $600-$700, which the Inspiron usually can't match. But if you get an expensive enough config for the coupons to kick in, the Inspiron is usually cheaper.

Not really the c90 is only a few more hundred dollars and has alot more extras. Webcam, fingerprint reader, esata, hdmi, etc etc.
