So it was just announced today that Circuit City is finally going out of business. That means everything is going to be on sale 30%+ as time goes by.
That means current games at less than $50 will be a bargain. Looking forward to getting L4D now![]()
Has anyone been to their local Circuit City yet to see the discount stickers up yet? Post if you do and your location so it would give the NBR Forum readers a heads up.
UPDATE: As of January 17, 2009 all Circuit City stores begin their liquidation sale. Locations will vary on start dates and will continue to sell until everything is gone.

finally. circuit city is horrible.

This sucks. I loved taking the Circuit City weekly to Best Buy for a pricematch.
HMMMMM, I wonder why they didn't make it? -
mismanagement.....hiring inexperienced newbies to replace all of the experienced higher paid employees was one of the big nails in the coffin.

My guess is they fell into the trap of concentrating too much on only carrying the most popular items to fit the most generic of needs. Sure, a store has to do some of that, but if I can't find much beyond the consumer line of HP notebooks (or other feature-poor models obviously geared for price war fodder) or the top 6 or 8 PC games (if that), I'm going to go elsewhere.
I think they had big problems with purchasing as well. I could rarely find the hottest items there (Wii, iPhone, etc.). The always seemed to be "on order with no ETA". -
I hate the way Circuit City displaying their notebooks. You can barely lift the notebook. I need to lift it to get a feeling about its weight.
-
Circuit city failed due to:
Not having advertised products
Letting go of experienced sales staff
and the final nail was betting everyything on big screen TVs this past holiday shopping season when the economy stinks and people were afraid to drop that kind of jack -
I used to work at Circuit City....I left them in August and boy am I relieved.
I'm in contact with a friend that still works there and he will keep me up to date on what's happening. But all is true why they failed.
I worked in the warehouse and most of the time new more about the products than the KIDS on the floor.
Managment was even worse. -
good bye CC, you will be missed. now that only leave one store left to shop at.

Sad I bought my laptop from circuit city just over a year back and now back home over the atlantic similar stores such as UK pcworld as also going through liquidation. This recession sure has quite a few losers as well as winners(somewhere)
-
Probably will see Fry's expand a little now to fill the void
-
It says on their web site that liquidation begins today... I'm planning on taking the bus over and checking it out.
-
-
Sorry, no info from me. The one at my location seems to already be closed.
-
Went to my local CC today. The sale has barely hit the fan. Games arent on sale at all. Blu-ray movies i think were 10%. Going to go back in a week.
-
The markoff was only 10% at my local CC. The deals weren't that great.
-
At my location, some TVs are at 10% off and all computers are also 10% off which would be taken off manually at the register. This may only be at my location though, not sure.
-
Everything but PC games were 10-30% off sale here in Hawaii, but mostly 10% off.
-
god, glad im in Canada, we have Best Buy, Future Shop and on top of that, we aren't losing The Source(by circuit city)
-
Talked with a friend that still works there and he said maybe by Friday the sales will really get big. Right now they are firing all the Managers and higher paid workers.(again)
-
Watch out with these "deals", there have been reports on other sites of large price markups followed by 10% and 30% off "sales" that end up at a higher price than what the item was a week ago.
We should be pretty smart as I'd assume everybody here is pretty savvy, but make sure you know what an appropriate retail price is on something, don't just buy it for the 30% off tag. -
Finally Circuit City is going bye bye! (Although I do feel bad for the people losing their jobs).
I never had a problem with them till my Mom's laptop was acting up (me being a bit younger and not knowing how to fix it like I do now), with Warranty and everything, we take it in, and the Tech took the day off, and there was no other one in the store till the next day. So they wanted to charge us to hold the computer (that's right, they wanted to charge US for THEM to hold the computer because their Tech TOOK THE DAY OFF).
That was the straw that broke the Camels back for me.
Now when I go and buy some games, I will have the biggest grin on my face, secretly going "Ha ha ha ha" in my head.
Good god I'm evil. -

I was just there today 10% off non sale items and sale prices on anything marked with a sale.
Nothing was a good buy considering everything in a retail store is already 15-20% higher than you can get it at a e-tailor also you have to deal with the and I say this in bold ALL SALES ARE FINAL. I will check back in a week to see if it has gone down more.
When it his the 30% point I then can start trying to get a few things.
DSLR (They have the Nikon D90 I want)
Maybe a new HDTV for my parents
A HD projector for me
And a hand full of hard drives (I just got a hot swapable HDD dock so now instead of backing up stuff to DVD's its HDDs)
Also may get a trio of monitors for a surround gaming setup if they have any in stock and the price is right but from what I saw today I only saw some 19" Acers in stock and there prices are very high. -
I just got the Orange BOx for $19 with tax.
Thats a good deal. -
Was only 10% off video games at the Quail Springs store in Oklahoma City yesterday.
-
I'm going to wait for harddives to drop to 30%
-
How goes it? and Happy New Year!
Q1: On HDTV ... what are you looking at ... Plasma or LCD?
Q2: Your HDD Dock ... how many HDs can it handle?
Q3: Do you think HDD cost is low enough that makes sense backing up stuff to HDD vs DVD blanks!?!?
G! -
I can't wait to get Call of Duty World at War for PS3 once it goes on sale, hopefully it does
-
I've already read a few blogs that were negative on the liquidation.
Big crowds, upmarking prior to discounting, no real big discounts yet.
Less competition usually leads to higher prices. I'm willing to bet that after the dust settles, someone will buy the name and open a store or two.
Things don't look too good for Office Depot either. We'll see what happens.

2.) 1 At a time, but they are hot swapable so just pull one out and put another in, its like a super nintendo for hard drives
3.) Its close, I can find a 500gb HDD for about $50 (+ ship) so thats about $1 per 10GB a DVD cost like what 50 cent? so its the same but I guess it depends on how much you can find each for.
The difference to me and why I am doing it this way is convience. Its a pain to burn a DVD it takes time, you have to mess with files and hope you did not think you put something on one disk and then delete it to find out you did not have it on that disk.
I have several files bigger than 4.5gb so they do not fit on a normal DVD, and if you had a file then later updated it you would have to reburn that dvd (yes there are RW DVD's but I never really trusted RW media plus it cost more) so with a HDD I can do everything like normal, just transfer files over fast & easy. Update them if needed, and have no file size restrictions.
Using a HDD for backup only it should last virtually forever, and storage space is smaller a 1TB HDD wont take up nearly the space of like 208 DVD's so you can invest in a nice small fire safe to hold them too
For sure there are pros/cons for each type of backup but for what I want to do and the mass of files I work with I think a HDD makes more sense and this dock just made it a reality. -

doesn't circuit city have that 30 day thing, like if you buy a game for $60 and a week later its $50 you get $10 back, or is that just bestbuy? i think they have it but i wonder if they will keep that for the liquidation.

Most of the negatives RE the liquidation I personally, attribute to general consumer ignorance.........liquidators buy the inventory lock, stock and barrel and then sell the merchandise with the sole objective of making a profit (hence the reason why '10% off' or whatever at liquidation is prolly more expensive than the orig. list price.......most people assume liquidation = CHEAP). Consumer greed is also a major contributor of negatives here (read this article on CNET + the comments to get an idea....).
IMO, Office Depot is existing in it's own little realm together with Office Max. Sure, it may sell computers and other assorted electronics, but I think they're viewed more as an afterthought......tacked on to provide both chains a source of somewhat valuable traction in a volatile retail landscape....(you are apt to find a good deal here and there.....but it is highly unlikely consumers would hit up either chain before they would something more recognizable like BB)
As far as the less competition = higher prices goes.......under normal circumstances, I'd agree. With the retail landscape as volatile as it is though, I don't think anyone--Best Buy included--can afford to raise prices. Perhaps BB will, but only incrementally if that. -

i went thier and their sales arnt that big, well for now, id rather go to bestbuy, but i just spent all my money on a mybook external hdd

Its early people. I would say wait about a week or 2 before they start marking down stuff even more (from what I heard, all CC stores officially close sometime in march). Remember when CompUSA went out of business, they were in liquidation sales for at least a month. Every week they had markdowns by 10%. I ended up buying a Full Version of Vista Ultimate for $50 because it was over 70% off from what they were selling it for. It was too good of a deal at that time to pass up.
As with all liquidations its better to wait and hopefully they don't sell out of something you want to buy. Anything from 30% on is a good buy IMHO. You should probably buy games around 25% off as resellers would probably get them at that price. Everything else is based on your budget or whatever you think is a deal for you.
Happy Hunting!
