So I installed Civ 4 on my new lap top and apparently it doesn't play nice with Vista. For some reason the computer doesn't recognize the disk so it won't let me play.

Works fine for me in 32 bit Vista, so it's not a universal problem, but I'm not sure what to tell you to check.
-
Update to the latest version and then try running the game again. I have no problems running the complete edition on 32-bit Vista Basic.
-
If you encounter the problem where it takes about 5 to 10 seconds for the dialogue boxes to pop up and the game freezes just set the movie quality to medium! Thought I would throw that in there!
Good luck! -
Here is part of a post I wrote from several months back that fixed the problem for a few guys and myself originally. It's been a while, so the patch numbers may have changed. Also BTS is Beyond the Sword expansion; if you don't have it, disregard that part:
I know it's a pain, but try completely uninstalling the game. Then install the game using admin account. DO NOT START THE GAME. Manually go to the site and download patch 1.61 and 1.7? Install each one. Then install BTS. DO NOT RUN THE GAME. Manually download and install the latest patch for BTS. Then hopefully it will run right.
I only have Civ 4 standalone game. If BTS is part of a new complete package and has to install that way, the above probably won't work. It may not work anyway, but is the heart of what I gathered from the Civfanatics guys.

Good luck -
hmmm, i didnt have any problem running it
try doing all the windows updates -
I'm running the 64 bit version so that may be the problem.
-
I run it on 64-bit Vista (Civ 4, Warlords, + Beyond the Sword) No problems at all.
FWIW, If you managed to install it, you might try a no-cd crack.... -
I wonder if they fixed the issue in the beyond the sword expansion. If I knew that it was a fix I would probably pick it up.
Unfortunately I'm crack ignorant. -
Is the problem reading the disk only after installation? (the copy protection check) If so, download and use a no-cd crack for your specific version. -
yea i had problems with civ and beyond the sword also with the 64 bit windows vista, but a no-cd crack may fix the problem
-
I have Civilization 4 installed on a Vista Home Premium 64 computer. I don't have the expansion. The game runs without problems.
Is the disc in good condition/ drive fully functional? -
Game installed with no problems. Disk drive is brand new and works perfectly with other disks. Would anyone be able to PM me with where I could find the crack?
-
Have you tried a firmware update for your DVD-reader? That might fix the drive's inability to read the DVD even though it's in place.

All the disk based DRM is why I prefer to buy games online and download. There may still be DRM but at least I don't have to worry about a disk.
I got my copy of Civ 4 from Steam. I absolutely suck at playign, but what the hay it can kill a whole day. -
I am having the same problem with vista 64 and civ iv bts.
Could you pm me also the bts no-cd?
