empire earth is a rts variant.

my fav strategy games are age of wonders.

I liked heroes of might and magic 5 though for a recent one.

Galactic Civilization 2 has won numerous awards for being an outstanding game with one of the best AI around (almost human like). http://www.galciv2.com/

That's all I can think of regarding turn based strategy games.

Oh ya thats the ideal choice

    galactic civilizations 2.

That is more civ 4 than civ 4 is. Oh it blows civ 4 away in the computer AI department. Way more challenging.

You ain't a kidding. The computer is down right brutal if your not careful. For the Dark Avatar add-on Stardock even made the AI more cunning.

Civilization 1/2/3 + expansions :D ... Colonization, Alpha Centauri, Call to Power 2, Master of Magic, Master of Orion 1/2/3, FreeCiv... Yeah, those are a bit old, but still, very similar to Civ4 :)

dont get masters of orion 3 that game is retarded

you literally just make your bar settings and hit end turn 1000 times and see who wins.

I would recommend Galactic Civilizations 2 and Heroes of Might & Magic V (HOMM V)from the list of new games..

If you are a die hard Civ fan, dont miss Galactic Civilizations as its excellent with real good AI. Pity it has no options for multiplayer. :(

HOMM V is a fantasy kinda game which is turn based but not in the same league as Civ 4 or GC 2.

GalCiv2, AC, I want to say BOTF, but meh... Rebellion - those are all Turn Based Strategy games rather than RTS

oh ya homm3 in its day was the best game.

bit hard to get into a game with vga or svga graphics today though.

homm 4 was garbage but homm 5 is good

check out disciples 2. Very simple game but amazing graphic art and it grows on you.

So of the three or four you guys mentioned, which would be the one with the shortest learning curve? I don't have too much time for games nowadays and need something I can get into really quick and have a good deal of fun to boot.

Well I think gal civ 2

    and disciples 2 are great

Because they dont have any 3d, so you can put them in a window do a few turns do something else and come back to that window.

They are both relatively low learning curve.

homm5 is more modern and needs more system

Are you looking for turn-based more than anything, Gator?

If you have a GBA or DS...you might check out Advance Wars (or Dual-strike on DS). Easy to learn but it takes some effort to master these games.

I also just recently picked up Heroes V. I played Heroes II about 7-8 years ago and really got into it so I gave this one a shot. It's quite good. Any of you guys have the crash problems that I see discussed in a few forums though?

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will look into Disciples 2 as I am more into turn based strategy than real time. Any other suggestions are welcome too.

Oh that is more a war game. Still in the strategy category

the learning curve on hearts of iron is steep steep.

Its definitely a slow moving 2d turn based game you can leave in a window and mess around with while youre doing something else.
