I'm trying to get a good feel on which class based FPS games are semi popular enough to make finding a multiplayer server simple enough. I remember several years ago, that there were websites that kept track of game servers for a lot of FPS'. Were there any still?
I used to play Team Fortress Classic a lot, but most servers seem to be filled with bots. Team Fortress 2 has way too much of a cartoony feel for me. The ones I've had my eyes on were Quake Wars, PlanetSide or the Battlefield series. I've downloaded the ET:QW demo, but I saw bots on a lot of servers. I'm not sure what it's like with the full game. Does anyone have it or played it recently to say anything about it?
As for the Battlefield series, there's 1942, Vietnam, BF2, and 2142? I just don't want to invest in a game only to find out the public servers are dead. Are there any other class based FPS' I'm missing?

Borderlands is sort of FPS... >.>
-
Ya Borderlands is really good, close to finishing it and moving up a difficulty. But it has I guess you could call it a "cartoon" like graphics which I thought I would not like. After an hour barely noticed any difference.
-
Sounds like you're looking more for an MMO FPS. Battlefield 2 still has a huge following hundreds of populated servers and many of them ranked, which is the most important IMHO. Why play if you can't get upgrades, etc. There's hundreds of other modded and unranked servers too if you're up for something different too.
-
What happened to 2142? ET:QW is really fun, heh. I thought I had BF2....don't know what happened to the box with the cd key, though. Sucks when you pay for a game and lose the cd key! I should start keeping a spreadsheet with all of them. ><
I love the class based FPS games because I like the support roles in them. However, it's hard to find one with a medic/engineer class that doesn't suck. -
Well, you have 9 minutes to get the whole battlefield 2 collection for $14.99 from Steam. Act quick:

Gamemonitor.com allows you to see how many people are playing a certain game.
Also, Battlefield 2 is still quite popular and is class based. -

I'm still praying for a successful Tribes reboot which will never happen
but I don't think borderlands is what you're looking for, it sounds like you're looking for more of an arena type fps game whereas borderlands is focused on the PvE, but yeah battlefields is fun. Have you checked out section 8? I don't know how many people actually got it but it's probably the newest class based FPS, with an enjoyable support role too imo. very sci fi feel to it, you drop down from the sky anywhere on the map, you get a small jet pack and a turbo sprint. there were lots of games when it was in beta, not sure about now -
BF2 $15 special is over, but Section 8 at Steam is $25 now.

I bought BF2 and the BF1942 pack like 2 years ago. I gotta see if I thew the boxes out. I refuse to repurchase those. Quake Wars, I can justify since I haven't ever had it. Heh. Anyone know if you have to purchase PlanetSide if you have the trial or if you can just subscribe without paying for a copy of the game itself?
It's just I want some FPS games to play, but MW2 is annoying me with its extreme focus on twitch skills. -
panetside really sucks. it's old, the user base is not that great, and the battles are no where as intense as they were a couple of years ago. the graphics are not that great, and the weapon kits are bad. the combat system isn't really all that great.
if you really want class-oriented multiplayer fps games, wait a while til more mmofps games come out, or stick with the battlefield series. they're much better. -
MW2 is all right.. best class game i ever played... MW 1 is the other one which you should get...

Modern Warfare 2 is great...minus all the IW.net issues...

Sorry to hear you don't like TF2, that's probably one of the best ones for sure, BF2 would probably be your best bet. Like others have said, there are still lots of servers and a pretty strong fanbase (in terms of numbers). -
yeah, I second TF2 or BF2
-
I wouldn't really say CoD4 or MW2 are class-based, since you can make your own classes with anything you want.
I'd say in order for it to be a class-based game, it has to have defined classes with relatively limited changeability. Like in TF2, you can unlock different weapons for some classes, but the class itself (and its function) stay largely the same. Same thing with BF2/BF2142.

CS:S is a good class based game too. There are two classes: the AWP, and everything else.

Heh. Funny seeing justifications for a class game.

Section 8 (very much underrated)

Look no further than Project Reality for Battlefield 2. The most popular BF2 based game out there:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HivQweXhgUA
It's worth buying BF2 for it even a 2nd time. -
I dunno. Battlefield 2 maps are large enough. Project Reality reminds me a lot of the original Operation Flashpoint, except bigger! You run for 20 minutes and die in one second without even taking a shot.
Get the whole Battlefield 2 package. Lots of maps, lots of good servers. I never get tired of it. At least haven't since it's been out over the last 4.5 years. I have over 580 hours in it, sad to say (see bf2s.com). -
. I don't think I'll be able to recover my BF2 cd key. How cheap can I get BF2, BF2142 and ET:QW?
-
If you just want vanilla BF2, I think you can get it for $10. With patch 1.5 you should get BF2 + Euro Forces + Armored Fury expansions. $30 for Complete Collection includes Special Forces. Not sure why they consider Special Forces still worth $20.
Battlefield 2142 ~ $20 most places
ET:QW is $5-10. Check Amazon. -
bummer BF2 collection was just on sale for $15 via steam.
-
You should check out Day Of Defeat Source, it's pretty cheap on Steam.
-
I just went out and bought BF2 and ordered ET:QW. The BF2 1.5 patch is 2GB, heh. Luckily the server I tried first will get it down in an hour.
-
Just a quick word of wisdom. Join squads and use VOIP in BF2. There's some pretty talented people out there. BF2 just isn't for run and gun, well it can be, but if you want to level up quickly, then best to work with a squad.
If you want go to www.bf2s.com and look up my username "LordHelmet" or PID: 41007624 and see if and when I'm online. I'll be glad to squad up with you. I can also give you my TeamSpeak server address if interested (or anyone else).
Just be warned, I have my two young boys that I may need to leave in an instant if they wake up and need something. -
I just jumped in a 1.4 server while I wait on the 1.5 patch to download, and 75% of the server had a 350+ ping. Ouch. I noticed the medic class works very similarly to the one in ET:QW. That's pretty cool. It took me an hour to figure out how to install the 3 booster packs just to find out the 1.5 patch will include them. Grr.

I was reading each post, guess I missed one.
This is interesting. BF2 was working fine last night with the 1.4 patch. I installed 1.5 and now it crashes to the desktop on startup. I tried switching the shortcut to Vista SP2 compatibility and run as admin, but still crashes. It also set the Vista theme to something messed up because I lost my wallpaper.
