I've been scouring google for about 20 minutes or so, trying to wrap my head around the idea of upgrading my laptop when the time comes. I own a Clevo M570u and am aware that it uses the MXM IV design for its graphics card (Of which I have a 7950GTX). I was wondering, since I read some contradicting articles, if anyone could fill me in on the scoop in regards to whether or not I could potentially upgrade my laptops' graphics card to a DX10 card. Are the mobile DX10 graphics card going to be MXM IV? Also, as a side note, any prediction to when quad core will be available for notebooks? Thanks! :)

Actually, I believe the Clevo DOES NOT use MXM IV, the only Clevo's to use to, and to be that we know of are: Clevo D900C, Clevo M570RU.

www.mxm-upgrade.com is your friend. CHeck it out. You may be able to upgrade your graphics card to a DX10 one if your laptop supports it.

(thanks for the link jessi3k3)Does this mean I will not be able to upgrade my current (ClevoM570u) notebook to a DX10 card?

Ice-Tea can explain it best, but I will try.

    Clevo and MXM

Clevo does NOT use standard MXM, they (as well as some other ODMs) use proprietary videocard module designs.

So the "design" will determine the capable upgrades of GPUs for the future.

The newest Clevo D900C and M570RU have the lastest Clevo videocard module design.... although they call it MXM-IV, from previous experience with Clevo gaming notebooks, I am very confident that the new Clevo modular videocards are proprietary. To date the only card that has been tested successfully and will be shipped with these new Clevo models is the NVIDIA 7950GTX (new modular design). The 8700M GT has been rumored for these notebooks as well, but there is no official specs on the card itself... but from experience, its probably on par or better than the card that it will be replacing [in this case it should perform as well or better than the 7950GTX w/ DX10 support].

The current and previous Clevo's (D900T/K, M570U, M590K/KE, etc...) all have the last generation modular design... in which the best card up-to-date is the NVIDIA 7950GTX. There is no word about newer cards (DX10) that would be available for this "older" modular design, but it seems doubtful.... because the newer DX10 GPUs [especially high-end ones] will require more optimizations in power consumption and heat dispersion.

    Hope this clears things up.

P.S. I guess I should include this in my next revision of the Clevo Guide... lemme finish my finals first. :)

Gophn did a fine job, just two things to add...

    * Clevo themselves told me MXM Type IV is not compatible with any other MXM Type.
    * Reaction of nVidia to MXM Type IV: "Huh? Wha?"

Conclusion: Clevo is using MXM as a buzz word.
