Ok so I just bought CoD 5 and I've installed it in XP and I've gone to play it and the game goes to the black screen, and then ctd's.

In the console window all I can see is this -

    Code:
Error: Could not load material "water_droplet".
Error: Could not load material "water_dynamic_spray".

    ------- sound system initialization -------
Waiting for $init to finish. There may be assets missing from code_post_gfx.

    Error during initialization:
    Unhandled exception caught
I have updated both my video card drivers and sound driver (realtek ALC663 codecs) but that hasn't solved the issue.7

I manually ran the DXSetup.exe from the disc to make sure as well.

Thing is I have Vista on the same laptop and the game seems to run ok, but I'd like to be able to run it in XP as I use XP the most.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this? Please don't suggest setting the sound to 24bit 48000mhz in the sound options (which seems to be a common solution given in the articles I've found via google), that's for Vista.

Thanks in advance for any help on this. :)

    1) Right click Computer -> Properties
    2) Click on Hardware tab
    3) Click Device Manager
    4) Disabled "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" under Sound, video and game controller
    5) Start CoDWaW

    Enjoy!

Wrong. I don't have the Unimodem audio device. Again that's another solution that has been banded about on various forums which doesn't always work.

I did, after posting, find a solution.

Run Dxdiag, if it shows any sound outputs as emulated you need to edit the registry and change device presence entries, where it says emulated and that is set to 1 you need to change that to 0.

Works fine now. Thank you for the advice though. :)

I did have the Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device so I just disabled it and it worked, glad you sorted out your problem. :)

    ravenmopheus,

Where do you go to edit the registry as I am experiencing the same error that you were but I cannot figure out how to turn the emulation off on my devices.
    please help

From your start button select the run option and type in regedit, that'll launch the registry editor.

Then just use search (ctrl+f) to look for "device presence" (think that was it but I'm running in Vista at the time of posting this so I'll check in XP later and see) and amend the ones that have emulation set to 1 and then change them to 0.

Might be advisable to make a backup before doing so though. :)
