The game freezes randomly. The process is completely random, once it freezes after 2 mins of gameplay, the other time after 1hr or never, but it's bothering me. I have settings maxed out and the game runs smoothly.
I have the newest GPU drivers 10.12 I believe. Laptop in sig.
I checked the temps with GPU-Z and its reporting a maximum of 87C (doesn't exceeded this), so I would eliminate the overheating cause.
Any ideas, how to fix the issue? There is some hotfix on AMD's website, but I don't want to install it, as it's probably a desktop driver.

try it on lower settings to see if that helps.

Does the game crash when it freezes or does it continue to work afterward? If it doesn't crash it could be a program in the background such as an anti-virus program or other scheduled task.

i've been getting freezes too.. its more of a game issue... looks like steam hasn't fixed it.

Black Ops is horribly buggy, and you are far from the only one with this issue. Check out the Black Ops section on the Steam forums, you'll be more likely to find help there.

i nver had problems with MW2 other than network problems which everyone had due to that stupid matchmaking but black ops is horrendus.. hanging at least once a day in multiplayer although single player has been flawless!

Its happening to everyone and to me also. You have to go to the task manager by alt ctrl del and close the not responding blackops.exe file in the processes. Every black ops forum also has someone with the same thing happening to them.
Lowering the settings is not a resolution.
My Black ops only does it in multiplayer, to the op does it only happen in multiplayer? -
Try this, it helped me with the freezing even before the last patch was released. This fix seemed to work for me due to my having a quad core processor like you (the OP). Go to your "Steam" Folder in your "Program Files (x86)", which is on your "C:" drive. Then: Steam --> steamapps --> common --> call of duty black ops --> players. You should now see the "config" and the "config_mp" files. Open "config_mp" with notepad and the go to "Edit" and "Find" multi. The first two settings found should read -
seta r_multiGpu "0" seta r_multithreaded_device "1"
Change the two settings to look like what I have above, that is make sure multigpu is set to 0 (this setting indicates whether you have more than 1 gpu or not) and change multithreaded_device to read 1 (this indicates whether you have a CPU with multiple cores [quadcore] or not). Save and close it.
You can do that for the "config" file as well if you want. If you have tried this already then this post is useless to you, sorry, as I said it worked for me. If it didn't work, I guess there's probably no choice but to wait for another patch; if they can even fix the giant bug that this game was on release. Last time I ever buy a game on release...most especially a COD game.

I've seen that before, and it didn't make a lick of difference for me, and I have a dual-core processor and single GPU.

BTW I searched the Steam forums, and there are a number of "fixes" in there, but all of them are different and some of them work for some people, and for others not, so it seems like a lottery trying to fix the freeze issue.
Its strange, though, because I'm playing Black Ops on my desktop also quadcore and 1 GPU (Q6000 & 9800 GTX+) and it works just fine with no freezes. -
I tried E.D.U's fix and it worked for me. I played 1.5 hours today with no freezing issues. Cheers m8 for the fix.
