First, I'll fill you in on the system:

    Dell Vostro 1500

    Intel Core 2 Duo T8100? (2.4ghz)
    3GB Ram
    nVidia 8600M GT
    Vista Business

I recently installed an update for 8600M GT from Windows Update, so I think it's up to date.

    The problem:

I just got Call of Duty 4. I was delighted, but soon after I started playing the game started to freeze every now and then, for 10-30secs a time. Finally, it froze for a long time and crashed to a blue screen.

The pc was fine. I haven't installed the 1.6 and 1.7 patches for Call of Duty, which could help. Also, I have no idea how to change game quality settings. Anybody got any ideas? I'm assuming the problem is with the specs of my pc.

Thanks guys, excuse the extreme noobishness.

Update COD, update your video card drivers. Try again.

when your system reboots and windows notifies you about the unexpected shut down. Click view files and navigate to the directory with the 3 error files. Now, download WinDebug and debug the *.DMP file to see exactly what caused the issue.

OK, having installed the 1.7 patch, it has got better. No more permanent crashes, just a few small freezes. I just found the NVIDIA Control Panel, and I think I am on to something regarding 3d acceleration. I am wondering if I want quality, performance, balanced or 'Let the 3D application decide'. It tells me that performance means a higher framerate - is that what I want? Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Also, I couldn't find where I could update the 8600m gt drivers. Nvidia points me to dell, and dell don't seem to have any answers. Thanks.
