I'm thinking of installing Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts on my new laptop but I've heard of new DRM introduced with this expansion such as phoning home and requiring it to be patched if it detects the internet.

My question is can I neutralize the DRM by blocking all internet activity with my firewall program (not XP firewall)? Or should I throw it in the garbage and install the plain old CoH?

CoH Opposing Fronts does not have DRM in it. It simply requires for you to login before playing kinda like Steam does. If you dont have an internet connection is asks for the DVD to be inserted and then it will let you play single player. I personally really like not having to have the disc in all the time. It does not phone home or require activation.

if you are connected to the internet you do not require a DVD in your dvd reader, but you can login with your account online instead.

Yes it's possible to stop the game from connecting to the internet (but is it really better to have a DVD in the drive?)

To disable COH:OF from calling home, add this line to your HOST-file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\host)

    Code:
    127.0.0.1 reliclive.quazal.net
or just block reliclive.quazal.net in your firewall.
Atleast i think that's the address used, it was a while ago i checked.
I used wireshark to find it.
