No need, I played both on Vista and XP without any problems... although if you want to play full screen, widescreen LCDs will look stretched.

So set the game to Window Mode.

I recently replayed almost the entire C&C series on my widescreen laptop. I didn't really notice the stretching.

It made it easier to see ore silos. :D

Thats if you're lucky. :( My recently bought copy of C&C: The First Decade crashes at the start of the install process, so I can't play any of them on my new flash Vista-toting laptop. Annoyingly, there's no problem on the old XP laptop I want to phase out of using. Generals is too slow to play on that laptop though.

Really? The First Decade worked fine for me installing it on Vista. Are you using the 32bit version, and fully updated? You could try running the actual install in compatibility mode as well.

He was saying that "It'll = It will" be fine i.e. not having to put it into compatability mode.

Yeah, I have Home Premium edition and it's fully updated. Compatibility mode, run as Admin - nothing works for even running the installation program! I'm pretty sure it's something to do with permission for altering/creating files with an InstallShield installer, since it does the exact same thing with Max Payne 2 and the 3dmark06 installer as well, but other programs have installed (and played) fine. UAC on, off - makes no difference and I can't find any way of getting around this. I've found some references to the same problem had by others, but no suggested fixes because I can't seem to find a reason it works for some people, but not others.

So I'm waiting for another copy of XP to arrive. It's frustrating having no choice in the OS shipped with a laptop, then having to resort to trying the old one when it looks like there could be major issues, and those issure aren't even consistent from one person to the next!

Sorry for the threadjack rant - I'm just annoyed because I gave Vista a chance, and it has so far caused me more problems than any OS since ME. And the issue seems to be with something that is supposed to work WITH Windows (Installshield).

MrWhereItsAt, have you tried running the individual installers inside the game CD? I had to do that in XP to get it to run, the main installer never appeared, even after clicking on the disc.

Er, do you mean unpack an individual .cab file? There's only the one setup file, which is the one that runs until the installshield progress bar (for starting the setup before it's even asked me anythin) appears and it crashes without specifying a problem. Not sure what I do with .cab files if there's not an installer to work with them.

I am very happy to say that Generals, Zero Hour and Renegade all work under Vista without compatibility modes, etc. Haven't yet tried the others (all installed though!) :D

The key to my problem was getting into Vista's hidden Admin account. From there I actually had permission to tell programs to install, run Autorun on CDs and DVDs, and that ridiculous problem where MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint can make and save files but can't open them doesn't occur. I can't believe after all that MS is just forcing me to use the Admin account as my day-to-day once more. At least I can do what I want now!
