My friend recommended me to buy Company of Heroes since he knows I used to love Age of Empires II and III back in the day.
So I went to Steam and typed Company of Heroes but noticed they had a v1 and a v2........
So I googled this but all I got is some results on the Steam forums and every single person/reply in those threads is different, one dude says COH 1 and the others says 2........noone really provides any good info as to why or how is one better than the other?
I do care about a game with good graphics but if playing COH 2 immediately without first finishing COH is going to spoil the whole experience of the game, then I don't mind COH 1.......
please advice.....

All the action is on CoH2 now, with new release of "British Forces" standalone game. Play CoH2 with your friends now while servers are active, CoH2* would be the ones to get.
You just missed the big CoH* sale...
"If you're looking to complete your Company of Heroes collection, you're in luck! The entire franchise is 75% off on Steam until Monday, August 31 at 10AM PDT."
But, the sale is still on for "British Forces", and you can get 2x the discount if you get another CoH* game first...
"Don't forget, if you own any Company of Heroes product on Steam, you can get 20% off your pre-order for The British Forces!"
*Quotes from an email I got from Relic Entertainment, Aug 28th.

imo, the coh series is the best rts out there. the different sides are fairly balanced, their skills and powers are thematic and historically relevant, and gameplay revolves around sound tactics, use of cover and map control (rather than apm, fixed meta build orders, etc).
for me there is no reason not to get coh2 at this point. when coh2 launched, it suffered from some balance issues (which was actually by design), which made it play quit differently from coh1 and many didnt like this change. coh2 has undergone many balancing changes and now plays more like coh1, and i believe the game is better because of this and the better of the two ( when you consider the added gameplay mechanics).
coh1 has more mods and maps. some of those mods drastically change the game. at this point, coh2 has many community made maps but for the most part, people still play vanilla coh2 (aside from the maps). i really havent seen any coh2 mod as expansive as the total overhauls for coh1, nor do i know of any active community in coh2.org that regularly plays modded coh2.
lastly, coh2's multiplayer community is larger than coh1's. matches in coh2 are easier to find and setup. -
I actually prefer the first of the two games, however I do not play the vanilla game in any case. I play the Blitzkrieg mod and it's a LOT of fun. However, comparing the two, it's a matter of do you want Russians or Americans? Because you get Germans with both. x3

you do get americans in coh2 via an expansion and the new coh2 expansion will introduce the british.

I ended up not buying it as I was too confused with all these expansion packs. I don't know what to buy, what is the actual game, and what the heck are all these expansion packs!

all you need is the base game, the expansion packs you just get to add flavor and diversity to the base game if you happen to really, really like it. they are definitely not needed to enjoy the game. but its your call. too bad though if you skip this, youre missing out on what i consider the best rts out there.

To be fair, the first game runs a LOT better and requires a great deal weaker set of hardware to max out and maintain higher FPS.
That, in all honesty, is why I play the first game over the second one. >.> My poor 560M can't handle the newer game. :Chmscott likes this. -

So I just launched Steam and it offered me to Buy Company of Heroes 2 British something...... Now is that just the expansion pack or what? As In, if I don't own the actual COH2, would it work or I'd need to buy the regular COH2 first before buying that expansion pack? -
Yes you need the base COH2 before doing anything!Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.

Matrix Leader, I haven't tried it, but the standalone expansions - run without COH2 - like the new British Forces, say you can run it and access all the CoH multiplayer action.
It doesn't matter which you buy first, cause you can install them in any order, so you might as well try the British Forces (or another) standalone pack before buying CoH2.
Here is what is says on the page for British Forces:
"Company of Heroes 2: The British Forces is the new standalone multiplayer release in this esteemed World War II RTS franchise. It is the perfect entry point into the vibrant Company of Heroes 2 community. By buying The British Forces, players who do not yet own any COH2 product can access all existing Company of Heroes 2 maps in auto-match, and play against all other existing factions in multiplayer or through skirmishes against the AI."
You likely need to purchase CoH2 base to use non-standalone expansion packs, and to play single user maps from those and the base.
Let us know what you figure out

Ill just buy both and be done with it, too tired of this confusion
I also bought Ryse: Son of Rome since my favorite movie of all time is Gladiator and this is like a sequel to the movie

Guys I bought Company of Heroes then I bought Company of Heroes 2 + the British Expansion pack......
now in the downloads list I see two versions of Company of Heroes 1, a regular one and a steam version
I didn't install any yet, what's the diff. between those to COA1? which one shall I install? -
Matrix Leader, install the Steam one, the other is just some kinda placeholder.
I haven't tried for a while, but once I installed the Steam one I tried to install the other - like Metro/Metro Redux, but it wouldn't let me
Update - Hmm, I am installing the Steam version (I am on a new OS Build on new Storage), and the other one is showing the Install button... I will wait till the Steam version install is done and look again.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Thank you all for all the help and making me make a decision. Great crowd here.hmscott likes this. -
Matrix Leader, it looks like you can install both, finished the Steam version install, brought it up and configured it, then went back and started the install of the non-Steam version... wild.
Quick google search...
"You'll want to install the game listed as Company of Heroes (New Steam Version). It should be exactly the same as the original game with the two standalone expansion packs ( Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor, both of which introduces new factions, units and campaign missions to the game), but is updated to use Steamworks for its multiplayer component, as the game switched to Steam in May 2013."

Have fun
Update: After install the non-Steam version wanted to install a bunch of stuff when I clicked Play, so I canceled that and selected Remove Local Content - it is the non-Steam integrated install, so I didn't want to follow through on that install/play.Last edited: Sep 5, 2015 -
Matrix Leader, also you bought the old COH, not the new COH2...
The COH2 British Forces is a branch off the newer COH2...
COH is fun too, not to suggest otherwise, but if you want the new COH2, then you can reject/refund the COH, and get COH2 base now.
Or, just order COH2 now and keep COH
-
Lol can you get a refund? Humble Bundle has the entire COH2 franchise and all DLC's for 16 quid... Refund it and get it from humble bundle

Yuppie!! I added the key code they gave me and now the whole franchise is on my list of downloads
-
Matrix Leader, how did it go?
I just noticed the install list was dodgy, you only need to install CoH 1 Steam Version, and CoH 2 - skip the CoH 2 Beta, Opposing Fronts, and Tales of Valor - those 2 are Steamafied and included in the DLC with CoH 2 install. And, the CoH 2 Beta is no longer active. If you installed everything, you can uninstall and save many GB
