    Hello forum members,

I am having a mysterious problem. I have just made my first online game purchase through Steam; I bought Company of Heroes and the Opposing Fronts expansion pack and installed them.

Now, it seems that irrespective of which title I choose to play, Opposing Fronts is the only game loaded, and within Opposing Fronts I can ONLY play the Panzer Elite and British teams. The American and Whermacht teams are locked, with the game informing me that I must purchase the next expansion, Tales of Valour, in order to use these factions.

This is ridiculous. I don't remember CoH being such a PIA when it came to activation; I know that CoH unlocks this functionality, so I suspect that Company of Heroes hasn't been activated. The problem is that I can't start CoH even if I navigate to the executable for the game myself.

My first experience of purchasing a game online via a content delivery system like Steam will be my last. The restrictions placed on the user are absolutely absurd.

    Thanks for any help.

Can you play the first campaign? The landing in normandy or something o.o If it's locked, put in the serial keys you obtained from the original CoH

Otherwise, uninstall both games, redownload and install CoH first and then login to see if American and Wermacht is unlocked. If it is, then install Opposing fronts

my feeling is that you may have to download the 1gb patch that updates your game to allow you to play online, this is just a hunch as i also had troubles after installing CoH gold edition on my new machine where i had to enter the key and then it wouldn't allow me to access all the units i ended up buying tales of valor and after that things worked perfectly.

What you need to do in when you get to the login screen within COH there is a button that says Add Product, click that and enter your Opposing Fronts product key, you should be all set then. It doesn't automatically register.

Why would I enter an Opposing Fronts key for the original Company of Heroes? My understanding is that they have separate keys, both of which are automatically stored and entered through Steam. For instance, when I fired up OF for the first time, the product key was automatically entered for me.

Then again, I could be wrong seeing as this is my first time doing this.

They aren't automatically entered and yes they do have separate keys. Steam won't do it for you because this is your Relic account not your steam account, so yes the games are bound to your Steam account but now you must bind them to your Relic account. I had the same problem as you so for long until I figured this out. Just start up your original COH, and Add Product, and enter the OF product key and see if that fixes all your problems.

OK, I'll try out your solution. I first DLed everything at 1.5MB/s, now I'm re-downloading at 512kB/s. :(

I wish I got to you before you re-downloaded it. :( I had the exact problem as you and I know how frustrating it is to only have 50% of a game.

It's OK, I'm downloading it off my university's connection. My home connection would crawl at 60kB/s or so.

I've just read elsewhere online that Company of Heroes has no multi-player LAN function in order to combat piracy. Do you know if there's any truth to this?

I have played LAN several times with a few of my buddies who have the game. So I don't know where that myth could have surfaced from.

I've played LAN in company of heroes o.o Can't remember how but i think i created an ad-hoc connection from my laptop and had friends connect to it and then play a skirmish/multiplayer

I think it's the operations that you can't play LAN o_O But then again those are in Tales of Valor.

Good, then I won't be disappointed with this game...

Btw, does anyone have advice on how to play the Panzer Elite? What units work together best? I really suck when I play this team!

I'm level 13 with the PE, they're all I play. I could hook up with you sometime and help you figure them out, they're a lot different than the other factions. Add me on Steam if you want; Second2Last33 is my name.

Sure, I'll add you... when this massive DL is done. :p

Btw, what is it about the PE that appeals to you? I personally like the Whermacht w/ the defensive doctrine (depends on the map, of course) simply because they reign supreme in terms of tanks and general quality of units. But the PE is just... strange to me.

I like PE a lot because of the infantry, towards the end game the Allies are so focused on AT guns and mines etc that they don't have much to stop the fully upgraded PE infantry.Fully upgraded they can sprint, they are much harder to surpress, and they have better offense/defense the more they are grouped together. Like if I go tank buster with just 4 units I can destroy a American Pershing which is their most elite tank in just seconds. Also the PE is the only axis faction that can use artillery, which has turned around several games in my favor.

PE captures fast too :D I love using scorched earth against my friends since it annoys them to no end and cuts off important supply zones in matter of seconds :3

I dunno about combinations but I just run around with infantry up front to keep watch for anti tanks and have my panthers slightly behind in case anti-infantry vehicles show up

If you like playing it defensive, yes. The entrenchment or something lasts really long and is cheap. Royal artillery's fun and the Royal Engineers make their tanks really durable. Royal Commando's good for support gameplay with their triangular placement that shows units moving in the minimap within the triangle that you make. They cost a lot of manpower to be utilized fully though
