I was wondering if any of you knew what kind of performance difference i would see between the ATI Mobility Radeon x1800 and any of the 256 mb nvidia cards(7900 go, gs, gtx?).
I ordered my laptop about a week ago, and these are the basic specs.
    2.33 ghz core duo
    2 gigs ram 667 mhz
    80 gig 7200 rpm HD
    Screen: 17" WUXGA (1920x1200)
256 mb ATI Mobility Radeon x1800
    media center

I figured this is a pretty top of the line laptop, except for the fact that the x1800 isnt quite as good as the nvidia counterparts i think, and also i Could have gotten some sort of 512 mb card or SLI configuration but that would have put me over my 3500$ limit(warranty and crap is expensive!) And then also there is that crazy Alienware mALX video setup with TWO 512 7900 Gtx's, but thats completely out of the question. But anyway, since i decided on a 256 mb card do u guys know how that would compare with the nvidias?
Just from looking around at other laptop's 3dmark scores im assuming i should get somewhere in the 6500 range with this setup, but then again ive never done a 3dmark test of my own so... Let me know what u guys think! Thanks.

well from my research i found that the x1800 is the equivalent to the 7900 go. In my opinion i always liked ati better but that is my opinion. I think the x1800 would be fine for you because I believe it is cooler than the 7900.

Ti is equivalent but the 7900GTX is better than the X1800. BTW, what brand is this notebook?

The X1800 is a generation behind the 7900 series. If ATI would release a mobility X1900, that would be comparable to the current high-end NVIDIA cards.

Not to say the X1800 isn't good or wouldn't be adequate. It's still plenty for today's games, but if you wanted the latest and greatest, you probably should have gone for the 7900 GTX w/512 MB RAM.

For what i've read, the 512mb 7900gtx is not alot faster than the 256mb unit.Is the 512mb card really worth the xtra mony??

The 256MB X1800 is on par with the Go7800, slightly faster.
256MB vs. 512MB, the classic arguement. It doesn't make that much of a difference, no. But there are certain games that will use that much VRAM at the highest settings. It's worth getting on a high-end card like the 7900GTX, but I wouldn't spend a ton for the extra VRAM.

As was said above, X1800 is a generation behind 7900. It corresponds to the 7800 (which, when they came out, was slightly faster than the ATI card)

X1900 vs 7900 was more even.
That said, though, I'm not sure exactly how performance has changed in the mobile versions.
