Every time I play Starcraft 2 my computer shuts itself down after awhile. I've tried changing video card drivers to the new 196.86 driver but to no avail. When I restarted the computer I used HWmonitor to see how hot the GPU was and it was at 100C. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

I'm using a Dell XPS 1530 with a 8600M GT video card, 4 gigs of ram, 2.4 GHz core 2 duo processor, windows 7 64 bit

Clear out the fan vents for your GPU and CPU. Either take the system apart or spray some compressed air into the vents until a good amount of dust and lint comes out.

In other words, heat is the culprit, so it's probably a clogged vent.

Yea SC2 is quite the heat generator. My friend's laptop has shut down a few times due to overheating, and I got the display driver error a few times. Didn't think it'd be so taxing...

overheating... a very old problem... blow ur vents and fans with compressed air to remove dust... undervolt your CPU using the undervolting guide...

Also try the fix... it should help reduce GPU temps and use the official mobile 195.62 drivers... they seem to work great with the fix.

If the fix that you're talking about is limiting the frame rate, I've already tried that and it didn't work. I'm going to try the link you sent me and clear out the dust to see if that helps.

As mentioned clean out your vents, i would also stop playing till you have done it, the 8600m were prone to failure to start with and overheating it is only gonna make matters worse.

It doesn't limit the framerate... in fact , it causes GPU to run cooler.... it a way of undervolting...but try out and see...

Obviously the OP is in the beta. If that's the case I'd suggest reporting this issue in Blizzard's SC2 beta forum if one exists. Perhaps it's an issue that can be dealt with on the software side?

No, its definitely a hardware problem. Either overheating, or he doesn't have the CPU/Mobo drivers installed. Not sure if that could still be an issue, but it was for me years ago. My computer kept shutting down in the middle of games and after days on the phone with the videocard vendor and the games company I tried reinstalling all and any drivers and it turned out that the CPU drivers werent installed. This was back in the Windows XP days though. I don't know that those things arent automatically included in the build of any modern CPU.
