Not exactly. It has lost it's lustre in the hardcore mmo community. Although some say AoC has improved immensely since it's disappointing release the status quo seem to agree that it's too little too late.

    Entertaining discussion here

And you can also get an idea from the official AoC forum.

Id say if flopped, it had a lot going for it but too many issues and lost the larger portion of its community due to it.

I like how it had Adult content :D and they took that away, which wad dumb.

I wanted to play this one, would have been a nice use of my high end PC/Laptop due to its much higher than normal MMO graphics, but its too far gone to invest into now I think.

The main problem from what I heard is that it had a great beginning where you were by yourself in the very early levels and then entered the world. Unfortunately, the developers had to sacrifice by having a really crappy endgame which put off alot of people

This is a thread title you don't want to see at 8am on a Monday morning. I thought you were talking about late night host Conan O'brien. I was gonna say...

It was a major flop. I know people think funcom was great because of anarchy online but after the conan fiasco I will be avoiding all things funcom.

So, without the OP's clarification, this thread could be about:

    • Age of Conan
    • Conan the Warrior
    • Conan O'Brien

And yes, two out of the three could be considered a 'flop'. ;)

Yes it flopped, although they claim that its improved its to little too late. Although the game does have a semi hardcore following, its not that group that pays the bills. Its the masses of people that were turned off by the game that led to the demise of AoC.

Quite frankly, AoC was released too soon.

It needed a little longer in the oven.

The first 20 levels are the best MMORPG ever made... then the next 20-30 are fun and worthwhile... after level 50, well it just wasn't done yet.

Add on top devs who quite frankly did more breaking of the game than fixing.
The client at release was buggy, but playable. The final patch I played made the game almost unplayable. (that's right... it was WORSE than release)
The taming down of already tame adult content was just wrong.
In a game full of blood and gore and demons and dark rituals... NIPPLES were the first thing to get edited out. Hello? Its ok to slice off someone's head, but seeing a digital nipple means death from "soccer-mom-wrath"?

The game was full of promise, and beautiful atmosphere and sound and graphics... and the first 20 levels of content were amazing... then such a letdown when you get to 50 and realize that if you didn't roll Tempest of Set, you were at best not even 50% as powerful and that only Tempests of Set could really do anything. (worse a tempest of Set is a combination of two classes and it showed... in some cases they were 3x more powerful than other classes)

I still believe the game could be amazing.. but the devs they had were just plain horrible.
(You know you have done something wrong when every area is balanced for a full group of ONE class becuse that class is 2-3x better than any other class!)

Yeah, I think its safe to say Conan flopped... then again Warhammer flopped and so did every other MMO slated to come out recently.

Yeah the adult content and the graphics were a major plus, but gameplay was flat lined for me the entire time. Yeah it was great at first but after the same gameplay even into my 40s made me drop it like 3rd period french class. Had gameplay changed with each level bracket(1-0, 11-20, 21-30 ect) then I would have stuck around a little longer, but between that and all the damned patching and instanced zones puting party members into different instances of a zone I was done. Washed my hands of it and went back to WoW to help the t6 push.

It flopped since the Jewish gaming market is quite limited.

Considering it'll make me avoid any future Funcom games, yeah I'd say it's a flop.

Just like Vista it flopped at release, but over the year it has been polished and like Vista in it's current state is worth checking out. They have a free trial so try it out and decide for yourself.

Sorry I'm late to this thread, kind of lost track of it.
I meant Age of Conan, but since this is in the gaming section, I thought that would have been apparent. :p

I'm kind of curious about Mirror's Edge. Did that ever last long? But I've been reading that it uses SecuRom, a big no-no for me, so I wont be getting it.

Edit: Hmm, did the Tonight Show with Conan flop? :p

wow my friend used to say that line all the time, as we went to school together, I thought he actually dropped 3rd period french class, is that actually a line from somewhere?

back on topic, if it didn't flop before, it's definitely flopped now with promising titles like Aion and TOR coming up, and who knows, maybe they'll make AoC a game for the froobs in the future like AO

Wait, what? Funcom was not great because of AO. Funcom had one of the worst releases in the history of the MMO genre with Anarchy Online. The game was bugged so badly that on its first release weekend, players couldn't log on because the code/servers were so borked. Players called it "Black Friday" for Pete's sake.

After the eventual fallout over this fiasco, Anarchy Online was a ghost town MMO after players left it in droves. Anyway, read the following article for yourself, such as the source may be.
