So I hooked my 32 inch bedroom tv (Sony bravia bx32) to my laptop via hdmi. The tv native resolution according to Sony is 768p. I can however set it to 1080p in windows and games but it makes the picture worse than 768p at least in windows. Why is that?

Would u run it at 768 or 1080p in games?

No i am very sure it's an lcd

Also when I choose resolution In windows it recommends 768p and 1080p looks really bad. I can't even read text on it when I set it to 1080

I doubt that you are running 1080p on a 720p native television, it's probably 1080i. You should always run at the display's native resolution, upscaling or downscaling will always lose a great deal of picture quality. Besides you will get better FPS in games at a lower resolution.
