I know this is controversial and this is just a test. But we can't exclude the consoles as was recently expressed to me.

Rules: no slamming consoles. They are actually PCs at this point. Anyone who starts a console vs PC master race fight will be permanently banned from posting here in this thread. No exceptions.

Sharing of gamer tags is allowed and encouraged.

No slamming one console over the other. We all know they have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Video game comparisons are fine versus PC as long as they are done in a tasteful manner

    No flaming for any reason.

Yes I have consoles. Yes I have two PCs. No I'm not partial to any of them. All have their merits, all have their failures.

No, there will be no warning. If you cause trouble I will reply ban you and remove your post(s).

Now for the big why... Well consoles are all x86 which makes them computers. If you take issue, PM me, it's not like I'm going to make this a sticky. It's a test to see if this board is ready to have mature conversation about consoles. Like it or not they are PCs and they are built for gaming and with the Steam boxes coming, I felt it was time to add a thread.

It won't be a sticky until it reaches 5 pages of meaningful posts.

This is the fairest way to do it.

Game tags and IDs are encouraged to be shared - here are mine

    PS3/4 - Saeren
    XB1 - Ethrem

If you have a grievance with this thread, please PM me.

Let me start... I never really played the GTA series... But let me tell you... GTA V looks like a next gen game should... And I keep messing up right away... I mean this game is everything Watch Dogs tried to be... But looks incredible on the PS4. I'm a lot less annoyed by the 5 hour install time, this game looks awesome. There's no two ways about it. Vegetation even moves. Didn't expect that. And cars are so responsive that I wrecked because I'm not used to it... I slam the consoles like everyone else but GTA... Other than the 5 hour install after the download... This game pushes it...

The only thing I use my console for is for a lot of Xbox 360 LIVE and Kinect games that my kids play. Albeit we've played through the likes of Rayman too. I just can never play action or FPS or strategy games on a console. I guess driving games are OK, have had fun with Dirt Showdown.

Due to the backwards compatibility no-show at PS4/XB1 announcements 2 or so years ago decided to make PC my primary means of gaming for cross platform games, so my PS4/XB1/WiiU are pretty much just exclusive title gaming systems. That said their exclusive titles are pretty good :)

Big thumbs up for Microsoft for bring back Xbox360 backwards compatibility emulation to the XB1 in a better way than it was handled for the Xbox -> Xbox360 emulation.

Looking forward to Uncharted Trilogy and Uncharted 4 for PS4, Halo 5 for XB1, and Legend of Zelda for WiiU.

Unless you're the Wii U with its PowerPC Processor.
But speaking about the Wii U, we can share our Miiverse /Wii U ID if we have one, yes?

I haven't taken the plunge into the current gen of consoles yet, mostly due to the fact that I game nearly exclusively on my notebook. Second reason my wife hasn't finished Skyrim and Fallout 3 on 360. I like my 360 and PS3, but they're too long in the tooth for me now. We'll probably be buying an XB1 for my wife to play Fallout 4. I'll get a PS4 for myself at some point to play those exclusives.

No point in sharing any IDs for me as I don't really play multiplayer anything anymore. The only multiplayer I play these days is in person and virtual tabletop rpg and board/card games.

Fallout 3 is on the list for the backwards compatibility for XB1 (I think if you pre-order Fallout 4 for XB1 you get Fallout 3 Xbox 360 with it). I think Skyrim is also pretty high on the list as far as titles that will be backwards compatible.

Well, I am a PS4 and Wii U owner. Personally I don't have an Xbox One bcause I don't even have that much time to game lately, to my own dismay haha. Aside from that, I tend to play a handful of exclusives over consoles, and most multiplatform on PC.

I had such a good time with Bloodborne, and I am transitioning to FFtype zero. If I had more time, I could play games like skyrim, fallout etc, properly. I also have a vita and a 3ds (well the 3ds is my wife's) but I play some games on it from time to time.

I have heard great things about GTA5 including from friends that normally don't play those kinds of sandbox games. I might give it a try.

Absolutely, I don't remember mine lol.

I'm really happy to see the reception was a lot better than I thought. We have to admit there are some killer games for the consoles and while we all hate ports...I found out last night when it works the other way around. 5 hours to install GTA V after it downloaded... Install takes so long it actually warns you to shut off your power save settings...

But what a gorgeous game... I didn't think the PS4 could pull that off. It looks almost as good as Episode Duscae (FF XV demo that Square actually updated with a new boss, a more stable frame rate, I think that's a first for a demo)

When #PCMasterRace tries to use a console
    [IMG]
I apologize for my lame gif, I wanted to find one of someone legit slamming some console into the floor to ask Ethrem if it was okay because I am a loving troll, but I failed to find one. This was cool however =D.

Anyway, my only consoles are a Wii and a PS2, so I don't think I'd say all that much here.
Acquire GTA San Andreas yesterday and play it 3 days ago =D.

Sooo... who else was bitterly disappointed by the new Metroid game being shown by Nintendo at E3? When I saw the words 'Metroid Prime' and '3DS' in the same sentence I couldn't have been happier to be a 3DS owner. Then I actually read into what it was about and my heart sank into the dark, cold void.

Back when the x360 was new they sold a Force Feedback racing wheel. Worked good with Forza and other games, and the Force Feedback really added to the experience, IMO. I liked it, but it was an expensive add-on and seems to have been dropped later.

The problem there is just because it's on the list doesn't mean it's going to get Backward Compat.. that's a user generated list of voting. It's up to the publisher/developer. Still.. just those two having compat support isn't a reason to buy an XB1. A game I can only get on XB1 is a reason, and for me those reasons don't exist until the wife wants to play FO4. :)

I really want a PS4 though. But I have enough in my backlog on PC that it would be kind of silly to plunk $399+games on a PS4 right now.

Consoles can pull off some surprising technical feats due to the consistent platform. There's literally zero compatibility problems the developers have to look out for and can optimize the living snot out of anything they push to it and know everyone will get the same experience. It's one of the great things about putting a good console in the hands of competent developers. I love consoles, they're perfect for what they're for.

I couldn't get into the Prime series... I just want another 2D or 2.5D Samus Aran game, but that's just me. So yeah, I probably had double the amount of disappointment you had.

    Prime series is sublime.

My brother used to own a GameCube back in ye olden days. Whenever I got the chance to play Prime 1 & 2, I loved every second.

Fantastic music and sound design, great art design, splendid graphical prowess for its time, strong feeling of isolation and exploration, satisfying environmental puzzles. Such an atmospheric game. So damn good.

    I need a true singleplayer Metroid. Not multiplayer-only spin-offs.

I've tried Carbon on 360 and the experience was great, For me the consoles are awesome for racing types & multiplayers are fun too on consoles.
Tried playing Halo 3 (Played 1 and 2 on PC) but I can't just manage to get a good control and better shooting UX over the PC. I'm looking forward to get an XB1 for that Halo 5 exlc & get acquatinted with that controller for FPS but before that I think, I'll wait for any surpise updates for the consoles to push full 4K capable HW..

Oh wow, I'd love that Halo MCC rumour to be true. I have so much nostalgia for 1 & 2 on the original Xbox (it was the first & only home console I ever owned). Never got to play 3 or 4. Would love to some day!

Back on Nintendo news, I've just learnt that the new Metroid on 3DS will have a singleplayer mode, which does increase my hope for that game somewhat. I mean, I did enjoy the singleplayer mode of Hunters on the DS, despite it obviously not holding a candle to the true Samus Prime series titles. I just want the experience to be as close to Metroid Prime on GameCube as it can possibly get. Give me plenty of good quality singleplayer content.

Fixed that for you. The Metroid Prime games on the Wii (all three of them; thanks Prime Trilogy) are superior to the Gamcube ones thanks to no needing a GBA for a skin and Wiimote + Nunchuck controls.
    And widescreen support.

I grew up on the original style 2D Metroid (NES), Metroid 2 (GB), Super Metroid (SNES), Metroid Fussion (GBA), Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)... when I put Prime into my GC my first reaction was... not positive. I take it for those who dig the Prime Trilogy it was your first introduction into Metroid universe?

EDIT: I am grateful that the Prime series exists in that it kept the Metroid franchise alive, and obviously it was enjoyed by people to spawn a Trilogy. Just not my cup of tea. Not trying to start a 2D better than 3D argument.

Man, for me Super Metroid is still the pinnacle, as an overall package.

I liked the Prime games but they were very different. I am hopeful there will be a new metroid at some point.

Yes, it was my first Metroid game ever. Haven't played Prime 3, only 1 & 2. My experience of the 2D Metroids goes only so far as Metroid Fusion on the GBA, which I definitely enjoyed.

I'm too young to have experienced the NES/SNES days. I also never experienced the N64. My very first home console was the Xbox, whilst at the same time my brother got a GameCube and later a PS2.

The 6th console generation is where my nostalgia originates from!

I mean, I want to contribute to this thread somehow, problem is that the only console I ever owned was some Chinese SNES knock-off a long while ago... Oh well, I guess the best contribution on my part would be to remove myself from this thread...for a while that is :D.

The OG SNES did cost a fortune. I'm from Eastern Europe, and given 90's history and economic situation (and it still is crappy today in a lot of those countries) OG SNES wasn't exactly something a lot of people could afford back then, so a Chinese copy was an only valid option.

Fusion was my first Metroid game and I really enjoyed it. I also greatly enjoy the Prime series. They are different kind of games set in the same universe, so liking one might not mean liking. It's not a matter of 2D vs 3D it's a matter of wholly different game design if you ask me.

A new Metroid, Prime style or 2D à la DKC returns which happens to be made by Retro as well would mean me getting a Wii U.

So I got Arkham Knight for PS4 - glad I did after the PC fiasco, runs great on PS4. The story however...left me severely underwhelmed and...

honestly, after Joker dying in Arkham City I knew the story couldn't recover. Anything with Batman that doesn't include Joker just feels like an empty shell to me.

I don't even look at the Off Topic forum. I don't see a point in having two gaming forums, especially when we can have one console thread here in this one. I totally spaced the existence of that forum.

Well I have to say I was playing GTA V with my sister the other day and that game officially has the longest loading time of any game I've ever played on any console or PC... Is it all the versions like that or just the PS4? Up until that point Destiny held the longest load time in existence but GTA is ridiculous. Pretty smooth game when it finishes loading though, kind of impressive that it didn't really seem to have a lot of framerate drops, if any, once it was all loaded.

I think you will enjoy the game once you get more hours on it, there's a lot twists and turns.

I never really bought into that PC Master Race thing. Didn't see the point. Never bought into the Brand X console is better than Brand Y console hype, either. Didn't see the point. If there's a game that I want to play, and that game is for a specific platform, then I buy into that platform.

That's not entirely accurate. A platform needs to have three games on my "absolutely must play" list to be considered a worthwhile expense. That hasn't been difficult. Even the original Xbox managed it.

Is it strange, then, that Wii U and PS4 and Xbox1 do not have even one game among the three of them on my must-play list that I can't play on something I already have? Or is it reflective of the state of gaming these days?

PC has been getting good with the cross platform stuff, especially aided by the fact I play so many with a 360 controller kicked back with a lap desk. I feel I truly treat my pc experience more like a console these days. But it has the benefit of all the PC exclusive stuff, of which there is much good stuff. I was just playing Sanctuary RPG earlier today and loving it.

The funny thing is, I stopped playing Wasteland 2 to wait for the controller support, but I don't mind playing it without one, I've just grown used to the relaxed feel of it. I'll also buy into ESO if they ever patch controller support into it.

That all said, we're buying an XB1 for my wife when FO4 comes out, so that's my in for XB1 exclusives I might want to play.

For PS4, I want Uncharted 4, never finished Last of Us so I want the PS4 port of that, Bloodborne, and The Last Guardian is a must have I loved Ico and SotC to death. I also want to play The Order 1886. There's a number of PS4 exclusives and indie titles I want to play. By the time I get one they should be relatively cost effective.

    WiiU.. Meh..

Depending on the approach you take with the game, the main plot isn't horribly long. I plan to get all the riddles, checkpoints, etc. AR challenges...maybe. It depends - I did all of them in AA and I really hated myself afterwards. lol. I spent waaaay too much time doing them so the idea of doing them in AK isn't making me jump with joy. But no, I'm not a trophy hunter. However; I do complete games...like complete-complete them.

That's part of it. There was a time when my to-play stack was mostly PS2 games with a handful of PC games. The next console generation kind of leveled things off, pretty much equal billing for Xbox 360, Wii and PC. Not much PS3 stuff; I didn't get a PS3 until the Tales games started getting localized. The last couple of years have shifted the other way with my to-play pile being mostly PC games with enough 3DS and Vita games to cover my daily commutes (currently playing Operation Abyss on my Vita). I have two PS3 games on the pile, Tales of Xillia 2 which I'm not anxious to get back to, and P4A Ultimax which I want to play through before starting into the upcoming Persona 5. That looks to be the last not-portable console game I get for a very long time.

Meanwhile, I have about... crap, something like 20 PC games once I finish my current Fallout 3 run, plus there's Fallout 4 on the horizon. I blame Guild Wars 2 for sucking away some 1200 hours of my gaming time (I'll have been clean for 2 years come August, thankyouverymuch).

One of my foibles is that I have difficulty using a gamepad when I have a keyboard in front of me. It's entirely psychological. I know it is. I don't like scrolling through weapons or attacks or whatever when I have rows of perfectly usable buttons for binding each action.

The last time i played Batman was on PC so this is the first time i play on console and since the trophy doesn't look that hard, i guess i'll get the Platinum for this one (just platinum not 100%, not a fan of DLCs).

I played GTA V on PS3 and at that time the loading considered quite long. But i never play the one on PS4, maybe because the higher texture resolution the loading takes more time.

Been playing Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on 3DS. Really enjoying it. Lovely pixel art with great detailed animations, fantastic soundtrack, light-hearted self-referential storyline, memorable quirky characters, fun gameplay, well designed levels and cutesy anime-style character art. Just all round a great game. It's turning out to be a quite meaty adventure too, plenty long enough to be satisfying. I recommend it. Also available on Wii U and Steam - but seeing as it was originally a 3DS exclusive, it's best played on that console.

Should I find it odd that a laptop forum that doesn't take kindly to topics about desktops suddenly finds itself arms wide open to consoles because they're basically PCs?

Does this mean we can talk about desktops here too?

    ...seems only fair.

    ...Anyway....

I moved to PC because PCs had mods [for The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion] and now it seems that the XB1 is going to have mods for Fallout4.

...now if Msoft could just make a console in laptop form that can also run some form of a general office program and internet, I'd gladly pay $800 or so as long as the mods keep flowing.

Can you put an SSD in a PS4 and improve disk performance?

Yes but it's ridiculously expensive for the small performance boost. I'm going to have to bump my drive up to 2TB as it is because I've had to delete games to make room for new ones with my 500GB drive.

I'm going to suggest that consoles aren't PCs despite having nearly identical hardware. A personal computer is a general purpose device. It can run any program assuming that it is written and assembled or compiled correctly. A video game console is not a general purpose device. It has a computer inside it but the computer is constrained as to what programs are permitted to run on it. Regardless of its potential capabilities, its practical capabilities are limited to those permitted by the manufacturer.

You might call them special purpose computers. There are plenty of examples of such to be found ranging from what's behind the control pad of your microwave oven to the thermostat on the wall to the smart phone in your pocket to the multi-petabyte storage systems that make Amazon S3 possible. I call them "appliances" from the more specific "storage appliance" and "render appliance" and similar computing appliances. A game console is not a PC regardless of the hardware inside the case. It is a gaming appliance.

It is PC hardware that is all that was meant. No need to be philosophical.

I haven't seen that ...or looked for desktop related forums here since they moved all of that to desktopreview.com, but as that is here again why not put the console there.

...or probably a better solution: Sub forum for consoles stickied to the top of both the gaming forum and the desktop forum.
