    Hey all,

I used to play Quake 2 via LAN in Coop mode with my friend and had a ton of fun. This was back when internet connections were slow as dirt and online gaming was pretty much dirt also.

Since then tho, things over the internet have improved a TON and I haven't seen any games that support something like this. I'm looking for a game or a good mod that allows two players to play a single player FPS game together. Quake 2 is ancient, so I'd imagine there has to be SOMETHING out there!

I played a mod briefly called Coop or Die which was a Quake 2 mod that allowed for Coop play over the internet. It was still a lot of fun even tho the graphics were lackluster and the game in general was ancient.

But, is there a mod - or even better - a full game that supports two or more friends playing the single player game together? It seems like a great idea to me. I made a poll at the top to see what other think. :)

If you have any ideas of games that do this, please, let me know!

    Thanks!

You might also want to try America's Army... though most maps are the typical Team vs. Team, there are at least two maps where all the players battle the AI. The great thing is that these missions are not so easy and the players must actually cooperate to make it work, otherwise they stand little chance.

I myself also played Q2 in coop mode, I liked it a lot and I too haven't found a similar game so far.

"Sure! I'd love to play a game with a friend!"

All FPS games are really fun to play. Even the ubiquitous game CS is fun.

Left 4 Dead is coming in November! That should be a great team-based FPS game

I saw there was a mod for Half Life 2 called Synergy that looks cool. Coop up to eight players, which I think is far too many, but looks fun. 2-4 would be an ideal "squad" to tackle those pesky AI.

I never get into single player FPS games because I get so bored playing them alone. End up buying the game for the online deathmatch or team based fighting... but beating on some AI and doing a story is fun with friends. :)

Oh BTW, i mean internet based PC games, not console games. :p

Console people have a few out that are fun. Even Halo had a mode for it.

There are some games out there with good online coop. But I sure wish more had it.

Gears of War: This game was designed around 2 person online coop, and they really pulled it off.

Army of Two: An average third person shooter, but with really well done coop implementation.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2: A great tactical shooter, which is a genre just begging for coop play, and RSV2 delivered.

Halo 3: It's Halo, it has online coop with up to 4 players, not much more to say here.

Synergy: If you've ever heard of Sven Coop, this is the same thing but for Half Life 2. Anyone can make their own maps, and there are a LOT out there, or you can play the half life 2 campaign (and soon all the way through to episode 2). Most maps are best with 4 players but the only limits are the mappers capability and the hosts bandwith. To get it, you need to own and have Half Life 2 installed, and download the mod from http://synergymod.net/

i second synergy- they made some REALLY challenging custom syngergy maps, worked hard on a lot of scripted sequences...

and they let you play through the campaign.

My brother and I play Battlefront together sometimes. It's not really cooperative though, it's just me and him blasting away. There's not much communication or teamwork going on there.

I agree flipfire, BF2 is fun. It also helps when your squad members work together.

LAN Coop is the most fun way to play a FPS or a RTS :)

i think the point the OP was trying to make was that he doesn't want split screen or shared screen coop.

Yeah another for Rainbow Six. If you want, you can try your hand at being humiliated with a friend playing RS3 Raven Shield/Athena Sword. Otherwise, Vegas 1 (haven't played 2 yet) has good co-op.

Unreal Tournament 3 also has a co-op feature. It's a great shooter, but the co-op is for a campaign that is...well....weak but still fun.

Great ideas guys. I know that there are multiplayer games where you are on a team and obviously a team should be cooperating together. But then you're just repeating the same thing over and over against other real life people on an opposing team.

But this synergy mod for Half Life looks great and some of these other games you have all suggested look awesome too! I'll have to look into Gears of War, rainbow 6 and the upcoming Left for dead.

Consoles have so many more options for this sort of thing than PCs... drat!

Rainbow Six 2 and GRAW 2 dominates Coop IMO
