Looking through an old magazine.. two and a half years ago.

    2.1Ghz Intel Centrino.
    1Gb Ram
    80Gb HDD
    6800 GO ULTRA

    £1150 / $2000+

Begs the question... is buying the best worth it? or do you spend half and then just buy a another "half" price laptop year or so down the road as it will be better than the "BEAST" you could of bought...

    that was the XPS btw

Depends on how much cash you spend each year on PC hardware and the type of games you play. Current estimates on 8800m GTX purchases last from 2-3 years of high settings gameplay.

If you plan to play games, then you have to invest in the most powerful machine you can buy, since laptops are not very upgradeable. If not, then don't spend that much.

But in a lot of cases you could buy a laptop that would - generally speaking - play games high this year, med next low next...

or for teh same money overall...

    med one year

    sell and buy

    med another

    etc etc??

Do you like having all the eyecandy activated playing games? Then option one with a buy and sell upgrade every 2 years would sound reasonable enough to keep up with the technology curve.

Constantly selling and buying, migrating to new machines would be a pain. Even so though, you probably wouldn't save much if anything. What it really comes down to is what value you put on high quality gaming. If you figure you would get $x+ amount of value out of the setup, then you should spend x. If you don't, then spend less.
