Ok i know ive posted this already but no one was able to help so im trying one last time. Ive also posted on the Steam forums, talked to Dell and browsed countless websites but still no one knows what going on. Basically this startd about 1 week ago where i would get FPS drops every 20 mins from between 70-120 down to 15-25. Since yesterday its become permanent on all Source games including TF2. Now my average FPS is 70. Im confused since 1 week ago i played these games on max settings with no lag. It is not a heat related issue, because 1) My laptop doesnt get very hot when i game and 2) This FPS drop does not occur on any of my other games. Also my ping is always below 100 so its not my internet.

My laptop is a Dell XPS M1530 with Vista Home Edition, 2.0Ghz, 2G RAM and 8600M GT DDR3.

    Here are some screenshots:

    My Average FPS since yesterday^

Ingame ^ I now it says 43 FPS but that rarely happens lol. Once im in a firefight it goes wayyyyyyyy down.

If anyone can solve this problem for me i would make my day lol, thanks.

Are you possibly running all of your settings too high? Maybe cut back on some of the settings to get a better frame rate?

did you update video driver lately? also downclocking might has to do with unstable internet connection as well, try different network if possible.

Well ive tried it without 16AAx and 16AFx and theres little or almost no difference. Yes ive tried upgrading driver but tono avail. I cant imagine it being the internet either because as i mentioned before all my other games work fine offline and online.

You didnt have to make a new thread.

For the last time please post your temperatures using hwmonitor or rivatuner.

and use the CS:S built-in FPS monitor. Go the console and type cl_showfps 1

Actually, FRAPS may be your issue here. When your running it, it uses up a lot of resources.

fraps isnt an issue, its made for ingame use. If its worth enough to buy and people use it around the world without issues, i dont think its the programs fault.

    type net_graph 30 in your console...it shows fps/loss/choke etc...

Your assuming he's not using some of its built-in capabilities...like video capture, etc. After all, the OP never said he wasn't.

Ok, so how about I make a app for "ingame use" that eats up 100% of your cpu?

Seriously, just because a app is "made" for in game use, does not mean it won't affect performance. It is pretty well known that fraps does eat up resources. But most use it to record the game play, which of course it eat up resources....

If you have Ntune installed, it comes with a GPU/CPU Temp program. Just run it while your playing, and take a look to see what temps it shows.

Ok i ran Ntune with CSS for a while and my temperature didnt rise above 70c so yeh like i said its not heat related. Ntune showed me my CPU usage which stayed between 60-75 while playing CSS...dunno if that means anything. Is there a chance that my graphic card isnt working?

If it didn't work, you wouldn't be able to boot up.

He will be able to boot up, just won't be able to see it happen. ;)

    To OP:
can you do me a favor and check and see if the harddrive indicator light is on when the low fps occurs?

Your lack of FPS can be due to several reasons. Post a hijack log in here so we can see what processes you have. Maybe you have a troublemaker and eats your resources when you play. Maybe STEAM is doing something in the background...If you want help, help us to identify the problem and post some data.

What is different with your laptop from last week?

Some systems refuse to boot up if the GCs do not work. I had a text flashing on my screen when my water pump tanked and my X1900XTX burned out :(. My computer would not boot up. I took off the water block off and I saw ATI engraved on it :(. I am sure, the writing did not belong there because when I took it out of the box, the block was clean as a whistle :p.

That is not an excuse. Try starting a topic with that in mind next time. Go here, download and run it. Install this little program, make sure you run steam in the taskbar, but not CS, run HiJackthis(I advise run and save log option) and post the logs in here.

Ok the reason i originally i started this topic was because i need help and didnt know what was happening, not to have people telling me what i should know about computers. Anyway ill give the program a go.
