Hi, I'm deciding whether or not to get Counter Strike Source, it's now $20, and I am seriously considering it. I have mixed feelings though, how different is it compared to Call of Duty and the Battlefield series?
Also, should I buy now? Or wait for a new Counter Strike with a new engine?
And, is there a DVD version of it instead of a CD-ROM?

IMO its very repetitive...
BUT if your the person who likes to play on maps and have a huge slaughter sometimes with lots of hackers (hey its true) then go ahead! lol sorry
Its a very cool game, but im not too fond of the "lets practice for 8hours so we can pwn some newbz"
But its only 20 bucks and you can get lots of maps etc...
Its not much like CoD and Battlefield...
New engine? I think you should just go ahead... unless they announced it and its releasing in the next 3 months -

Thanks for your reply. I don't like things that are too repetitive. Are there a lot of maps and mods, and in mods, do A LOT of people play?
Also, what about the engine? Will there be a new CS with a new engine? If you know, please post, lol. -
Mods? I dont think (10% sure) that there are any...
Maps... plenty plenty plenty... players? OMGtoo many
-
There's probably about 20 standard maps or so, not including user-created ones and whatnot. At least I think so.
I've owned Source since early 2005 and am still playing it today. While I'm not obsessive with it, it's still fun to sit down on the weekends and have a good fragfest. Kind of relaxes me sometimes if I'm stressed. If you find a good server and make it your "home," you'll enjoy it a lot more.
It's a bit less realistic than the CoD or Battlefield series, and doesn't really involve much strategy, but it's still fun. At least for me.
And I'm pretty sure there is a DVD version. I think my friend has one. -
When I first got it, i didn't enjoy it that much (i got it with a big value pack on steam a long while back) because people are very good, even on the so called n00b servers. But a couple months ago, around the same time i started playing WoW (doh!), and i got really into it. Even though i couldn't do to good early on it was really addicting (on cs_office atleast) and because I played a lot i got better. If you end up getting it, go on one or two servers with people you really like, the good community (besides the hackers) helps the experience.

Exactly how many hackers are there...Lol, and do they try to mess up other people's computers? or screw around with servers and messing up gameplay?
If I buy this, how long will this last? -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
I'm guessing that there isn't a CD version, unless it ships on like 5 CD's, because the source engine is considerably larger than 700 megs. I would highly recommend just buying the game on steam and letting it download overnight if you have halfway decent internet.
If you want to play the original game without hacker issues, join a VAC secured server. People who use hacks get their account banned for 10 years or something on the first offense. Its pretty sharp punishment, but it keeps hackers away from those servers.
As far as the mod things go, if you click on a server that starts with the name zm_[mapname] its most likely running the zombie mod, which will automatically download when you join up, and is at least worth a few laughs if nothing else. One person randomly is selected as a zombie near the beginning of the round (he turns into a zombie with a bright flash), and he can only attack with a knife. If he hits you, you turn into a zombie. The counter terrorists and terrorists are on the same team, against the zombies, which have a TON of health and move faster, but are basically unarmed. If the humans kill the zombies, or are able to stay alive for a set amount of time, they win. Otherwise, the zombies win when everyone is converted or dead (zombies can die). It *can* be balanced and fun depending on the number of ppl in the server and the map.
There is also a gungame mod, (mapname is usually gg_[mapname]) where your level corresponds to your weapon: you start at level 1 with a low power handgun and progress through higher powered weapons like rifles and submachine guns as you get kills with your designated weapon. You always have a knife, and you can pick up other guns, but at the start of each round you are given the gun that corresponds to your level and you can only advanced to the next level if you get a kill with your designated gun. There are some variants of this, but usually a knife kill will also always gain you a level and also saps a level from whoever you knife kill. Also, the final level usually requires a grenade kill (hard to accomplish). Once someone gets a grenade kill (and they were on the grenade level) the game ends.
Another mod is a crazy physics "surf" thing that i never really understood.
So yes, there are mods, you don't need to hunt for any downloads, the mods are server side, and there are a ton of people that play.
Counterstrike source IS counterstrike on a new ?used to be new? engine... It's a classic. Highly recommend. -

Yeah, my friend said there are quite a few mods, but ive never played, he keeps bugging me to.

Try orange box
-
CS:S is the only game I can play without losing interest since Madden and street fighter 2(snes vesion). I havn't played either of those games in yearss I think CS:S is a must have. best $20 you'll ever spend on a game. Go for the orange box though Portal was actually pretty fun I passed it that's a rarity for me and I'm sure you've heard all the hype about TF2 though I could never get into it.
-
Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
Ok, thanks guys. I am now 95% sure of getting it. Question is...How does it compare with Orange Box. Lol
-
the Gun Game servers are usually really fun, it's not really a mod but they are usually on custom maps. If you play on a really professional server it's usually not fun, imo, but if it's just some random server with people who don't play in clans and **** all the time it's generally not too bad, running and gunning works well.

Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
Zombie mod seems to appeal to me. I might get it.
So yeah, should I get Orange Box for TF2? Or CSS? Lol -
ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
I voted 'no'.
1. Game is fun, extremely addicting. 4hrs of gameplay can easily go by like that. Don't play during school. It'll f**k up your grades if you're not watching the time.
2. Too many hackers. Even when the admins are on, I still have to prove certain players are obviously aimbotting or speed hacking. -
Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
Ok, well, now i'm 50% sure of getting it now. LOL, grades are VERY IMPORTANT to me.
How would you compare Team Fortress 2 to CSS? -
-
Seriously... I have a very good friend of mine that bought a 8800gtx quad core tc... just to play CS 1.6. ... I laughed at him like he was the last piece of *$^@ on earth
Hes now going to this club all day etc... just trust us... if you really like it... you'll get into it...
TF2 is WAY more fun since you can become different people and do different things and there are different game modes... and then you have HL2, HL2: EP1, HL2: EP2, PORTAL (veryyyy fun) all of that in the orange box -
Uhm Counter Strike Source can be pretty fun, you either love it or hate it I guess.
And yeah there are manym ods for Css well actually those are scripts lik the RPG mod or something like that, can be pretty funny sometimes. -

CS:S..
Hmm... let me see..
About 400,000 and counting custom maps, including about 200 or so I made.
Modding in CS:S is open source and easy. There for, many servers either run a pre made mod, or create there own. meaning that there's probebly about 1000 different mods that people are using in their CS:S servers.
Some of the most popular include, Gun game mod, RPG mod, Warcraft 3 mod, Deathmatch mod, Zombie mod, Zombie Horde mod, CSS DM Surf NoBlock, Hide N' Seek mod, and many MANY more.
Shure, there's alot of hackers, about 70-90% of players CHEAT, it's sad, but someone else hacking/ wall skinning, shouldn't stop you from playing many of the mods. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
its my understanding that if you cheat on a VAC secured server, your account gets banned permanently?
-
I'd say yes. Theres also enough "normal" servers to play on, if you don't like the mods.
Find a good pub with good admins and other regulars.
And it probably wont be the best thing for your grades. -
Its Great fun!!!
I normal play games on my 360.
But CS is still one I come back to on my PC. -
Not true, you can skin EVERYTHING in CS:S, and as long as the server is Un Pure, and most are, you can skin every item, including making every texture transparent, and thus seeing through walls. It's relatively easy to do, and I've even done it a few months ago, but I dont use them anymore as it makes the game uncompetitive and lame.
The only thing that VAC actually protects against are extremely known public hacks, yet most hackers know how to change one single line of code in each hack that makes them undetectable by VAC, only those who dont know how get banned.
So there for, about 99% of hackers/wall skinners will never be VAC banned. -
wow i cant believe you find cs relaxing... i stress out so much when i play it; one time i got so mad that i put the game on pause, went into the kitchen and smashed a chair into pieces against the wall....
-
i like css but i suck at it. people are really good on there and i just started playing.
-
CSS is best when playing in LAN ! ! !
Yes very fun actually ^^
But... get a private server up with ppl you know... thats the best way to not have hackers...
OR you just make sure you find a clan and get in because once you feel like theres a hacker you just say so and hell get banned/removed... and since your in a clan you should get commands to do so yourself depending on your admin lvl -
I also can't see how its that relaxing. Sometimes I play to relieve some stress, but end up sucking, then get mad and get more stressed. I find going for a walk after some long gaming is a lot more relaxing lol. -
Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
Meh, thanks for the replies, so I should get CSS over TF2?
-
If you want something to release stress from Valve, team fortress 2 is the game. Especially playing with a good team, as you observe and participate in the teamwork to win the round really help one relax.
-
id go for counterstrike, ive been playing it since july 2007 and im still addicted to it
but, when you first get it, you are going to die alot. The people that play that game are amazing and they will get you the second they see you.
(i didnt read too deep into the thread, but..)
1. dont worry about hackers, there is either voteban or admins that get rid of them quickly
2. finding a server you like is a good idea, try to find one that has a game play style you like and has nice people
remember, its only $20 bucks and a year worth of fun -
this is a question i was debating on for about a month and i finally gave in and bought it (30 bucks for css and dods at walmart) -- i must say i am verrrry pleasently surprised. i was not expecting much from the game but now i cannot stop playing it. i am all about online shooters, i play battlefield and cod4 and tf2, but i find myself wanting to play css more than anything. i honestly dont think you can go wrong with the sort of fanbase that css has. it is the most played action shooter in the world with over 60k+ players on at once and 100k with the original cs.
get the game, its not much money and i think you'll like it -
Yes, it comes with STEAM...so u can play online with 10-15 Ping...The Source Maps are worth checking out..
U might wanna Download More maps later @ fpsbanana.com -
CS:S! Best game EVER!
-
Ok TF2 is an amazing game but CSS made Valve imo. Ive been playing CSS for 3 years now and still not bored of it. Theres so many maps and skins it just doesnt get boring. Oh and dont worry its not an addictive game, ging on a server for one hour or so and then doing hw is great fund
. CSS is very different to BF and COD because theres a lot more strategy, teamwork and skill involved. Basically unlike COD u cant spray at someone hopping to hit them lol. Oh just one warning if you do get it it WILL take you at least 2 months to get good at it and really get into it..id recommend joining a clan which teach you good skills.
-
source is alright. if you're shooting for cs go with 1.6 over css. some of the movement isn't as good as in 1.6 and the hitboxes are a little whacked too. 1.6 doesn't look good at all though. but if appearence matters that much to you, source is alright. though, in my opinion, search and destroy in cod4 can be just as fun as counter-strikes de maps.
it's more about the way you play the game. cs is all about movement, cleverness, sound, and aiming. if you can trick people really good in fps, you'll have fun with cs. -
I cant see how anyone can reccomend CS 1.6, or CS CZ.
Both have such insanely horrible animations that someone simply turning around is soo jittery it's impossible to land a shot.
Everything is extremely jittery, the aiming, the animations, and the levels are boring, not much in CS 1.6 other than open corridors and horrible gameplay.
CS:S, regaurdless of what you want to believe, is a far better game. And attempting to spot someone who's using wall skins is impossible unless you know exactly what to look for.
If someone headshots you over and over the second you run around a corner, or they do, the chances that they're cheating is extremely high.
You may even be in a clan, and either never find out, or find out months later that actually every single member in there is using some sort of cheat.
I suggest you either just enjoy playing with cheaters and get used to it or don't, but don't put yourself down if someone is beating you, they're most likely 12 years old and have cheats. -
LMAO @ people still playin CS: Source
-
Not buying the game because of cheaters is a terrible reason, they hardly affect anything. -
as for impossible to land a shot, that's your problem and not the game. the hitboxes are almost perfect, and once you get used to spraying, it's all easy from there. i don't understand why anyone would say the aiming in source is superior.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdRpYaQA8cU
why would they have a leading hitbox? that's retarded. leading your target is about trig from the shooter, not the target. and in most cases, it's for long range fighting, not if you're 5 feet from me. so then why do you have a hitbox that is 2 feet from you at all times? so no, cs source regardless of what anyone wants to believe, is not a far better game. -
Orange Box > CS:S
CS:S isn't fun unless you are willing to put in lots and lots and lots of time training your abilities against better players.
Till you are good, get used to playing for an hour and getting 3/40 (3 kills, 40 deaths).
Also, when you die you get to sit and wait till the round is over...anywhere up to 5 minutes. BORING.
I still love CS:S, but it is a most unfun game for newbies. Although DoTA is probably worse...
I'd get Orange Box + CS:S, but if I had to choose one, I'd go for Orange Box and TF2. TF2 is much more fun as a newbie. -
o, and there are different styles of play, deathmatch, normal, zombie (or something, im not really sure ive never played anything but deathmatch and normal). So you dont always have to wait until the game is over to play again, it all depends on the server. -
-
CS:S is the best game in the world to own.
You can go back to it at any time, and can play from 5 minutes to all day.
It can be extremely competitive.
If you find them, it has some of the best FPS players in the world.
And there is just no other game that seems to require as much skill.
COD4 and Battlefield series require a significantly lower amount of skill to pull off than a good CAL game of CS:S.
When you die, you die. You win when your team can pull of a victory. -
havent the hit boxes been fixed on css?
